About Freddie
I am a former editor and business journalist with many years of professional experience who recently completed a PhD in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter. During my time at Exeter, I taught a series of Latin language and literature modules to first and second-year undergraduates. I am also a published academic author. My experience as an editor and journalist has provided me with a unique insight into what makes a good piece of writing and so I have also tutored undergraduate students, both in small groups and on a one-on-one basis, in how to structure their academic essays and improve their writing skills more generally. Teaching undergraduates was one of the highlights of my time at Exeter and I am really keen to continue to do this through tutoring. I am above all a thoughtful teacher, emphasising kindness and respect above all other qualities, who will work hard to make sure I can help my students as much as possible. I also have undertaken extensive formal teacher training through a University of Exeter official programme and am now an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. For the fellowship, I was asked to explore the depth and breadth of my teaching practice and experience, focusing on core values, knowledge, and areas of activity, and had to provide a formal written account of all aspects of my teaching in a document that ran to 27 pages. The process included a detailed written peer review of my own teaching by a senior member of the Classics and Ancient History Department at the University of Exeter. In her written assessment, my reviewer said, “There wasn’t a single moment in which [the students] weren’t completely focused on the task at hand… It’s a clear marker of how comfortable they felt that almost every student participated in the discussion. You took great care to give the students space, holding back at certain points to avoid disrupting their flow, which was really nice to see.”

I have over twenty years of experience as a high-level editor and business journalist, and have recently completed a PhD in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter. My professional experience has provided me with an in-depth understanding of what makes good writing, skills which I have been able to transfer to my academic work. While at Exeter, I taught a broad range of subjects covering literature, history and material culture to first and second-year undergraduates. I marked and graded essays for all of my literature modules. Lessons will be an hour in length. The first lesson will be used to learn more about the student, what they hope to gain from subsequent lessons, how I can help them, as well as determining the type of material that I will then cover so that I can tailor subsequent lessons to the student’s needs and requirements. I will focus on the core components of what makes a good essay: structure, argument, style, referencing, use of evidence, editing and revision. My classes will provide a series of practical pieces of advice which students can apply to their own writing. I will also consider in class examples of their work and advise them on how their writing can be improved.

I approached Freddie for help with Spanish language tuition. He took the time to understand the elements that I found challenging and was able to explain things in different ways to help me to better understand and overcome obstacles to my learning. His manner was always friendly and good-humoured while also remaining professional. I would not hesitate to recommend him to others who need a little extra help.
I worked with Freddie as a Postgraduate Teaching Associate for two years, and have heard only positive feedback about him from our shared students! He is a kind and patient teacher who genuinely wants the best for his students. He has a real talent for explaining complex ideas in a clear manner and ensuring the understanding of his audience. His wealth of knowledge and passion for his subject make him an excellent educator.
Having previously worked with Freddie on a number of academic projects, I can say that he possesses an impressive breath of knowledge concerning the field of Classics (and the humanities in general), and is a highly effective communicator of such knowledge. In addition to those traits, he has always been a professional, efficient, and compassionate individual to work with—skills that naturally go hand-in-hand with such expertise to be dynamic and capable educator. I would, therefore, highly recommend Freddie to anyone seeking to learn more about any aspect of the ancient world as I am confident that they will also have a positive experience and gain a newfound understanding of whatever topic they seek to know more about. - Dr Ryan Denson (University of Silesia in Katowice)
Freddie is a wonderful educator whom I had the privilege of working alongside at the University of Exeter. During this time, his dedication to teaching and the satisfaction of his students was inspiring. His knowledge of Classics and the Latin language is second to none, driven by a passion for Latin poetry and its context. I would recommend Freddie to any prospective student at any level, as he leads with a student-first, considerate approach, and masterful knowledge of the subject.
Freddie is an excellent tutor. He is committed to student learning and takes care to pitch learning at an appropriate level, stretching and challenging students whilst also providing a supportive learning environment. He is deeply knowledgeable about his subjects and as a result is able to pivot mid-session as needed.
He is highly organised, conscientious, and kind; all of which makes him excellent to work with. He has extensive experience working with students of different abilities and at different levels.View more recommendations
