About Gabrielle
I am a recent college graduate with a degree in French and Francophone studies. I specialize in French history and colonial history. I have gone abroad three times, twice to Paris and once to Sénégal. I have also studied in Morocco. I have a passion for French and Francophone culture and have learned a lot during my time abroad. In addition, I interned at the Holocaust Memorial in Paris. I was a teaching assistant at the college level for the beginning French-language sequence 101-103 from 2018 to 2020. I also was responsible for organizing cultural events and leading conversations. I plan to teach English this coming year in Lyon.

As a teaching assistant for beginning-level French (101-103) at Carleton College, I work with students in the early stages of their French journey to become comfortable with this new language. I aim to make French less intimidating and more fun and useful for each student. After a brief introduction and some ice breakers, the first thing I let all my students know is that it is okay to make mistakes. I want them to know from the first day that our classroom is a place for learning without judgment. While we spend the time going through the lesson plan, the end of class is reserved for 20 minutes for small group discussion.
I also work to have students engage with French outside of the classroom. I find that my favorite form of language learning takes outside the place of “formal instruction.” I send them links to popular music, tv shows and movies that people our age enjoy. As a French Council member, I help organize various “French Events” where students and staff are both welcome. We’ve hosted everything from a mock French café to a pétanque tournament. When students seek help, I find engaging ways for them to practice French reading, writing, or speaking skills. For example, I tutored one student who loved the NBA, so we read an article about the NBA in France to go over pronunciation followed by a discussion to practice reading comprehension. I plan to bring these skills to my online tutoring.
