My leading and teaching styles and techniques are evolving daily as I learn through professional development, by studying my peers, and most importantly by listening to my team and my students. To me, a large part of teaching is figuring out how people learn & grow through their education, and to help them become thriving stewards of an ever-evolving world. To this end, I make a point to address different learning styles, to create a productive learning environment, and to increase student motivations. I am passionate about education because I am a constant learner myself.
I have been teaching French as a Second or Foreign Language for over 16 years, in independent schools, colleges and university, in group or one-on-one lessons. Ages range from 03 years old to 75, and go from individuals preparing for a trip, to elementary pupils who need help with their school curriculum, to students getting ready for an exam or simply learners who wish to develop their speaking fluency.
I believe that a key element in the foreign language classroom - whether it is in person or online, for one student or several - is keeping the students motivated and challenged. My personal style of teaching brings enthusiasm, cultural elements, and technology into the classroom to increase learning motivation. I teach with a contagious smile and open personality that helps me to interact with my students as I guide them through their learning process. Teaching my native French language enables me to draw upon my own culture and personal experience as a foreign language learner as I teach my students to effectively communicate with me in my own language and, perhaps more importantly, to gain an appreciation for another language and culture.
My objective as a teacher is to motivate my students toward a level of independence where they develop a desire to learn and think for themselves. Students in my classroom are active participants, learn and form their own opinions and base of knowledge. Work should be set at an appropriate, but challenging, level. In addition, teaching in international schools and universities taught me how to respond to student diversity and different sets of challenges students may encounter. I have taken the opportunity to instruct a wide variety of students from various backgrounds and all facets of society. This enabled me to become more sensitive to students’ unique needs, employ effective listening techniques, provide individual and whole group support, integrate multicultural teaching units, and promote a respectful classroom climate with egalitarian norms and acceptance of differences.
In my quest to develop independent thinkers, I also strive to promote cross-cultural awareness and appreciation. Indeed, to me, linguistic and cultural literacy is one of the most important tools an effective teacher can instill in his/her pupils. This can ultimately contribute to shaping more unified and compassionate beings. As a native of France, I try to bring as much of my culture into the classroom as possible. I represent only one person from my country, however, and for this reason I have turned to technology to allow students to experience other aspects of my culture for themselves. I developed an exchange program with my former school in France to let the students become responsible for their own education and interact with French students via the emails and video chats. With less reliance on me the teacher and more emphasis on group participation and collaboration, this exchange program allows the students to come up with their own questions and conclusions about the culture as they interact with French people on a weekly basis. One of the most effective ways that I assist students is by being creative and utilizing new ideas and approaches to improve their learning environment.
Throughout the years, I have incorporated a variety of hands on activities, fun manipulatives and learning projects to inspire and motivate my students. At the end of the semester, students synthesize their thoughts in an essay and various projects, using the knowledge and understanding they have accrued with their own critical thinking. The results are often amazing, showing a unique perspective of my culture that I can always recognize as my own.
I believe that my enthusiastic, caring approach to teaching French enables students to acquire both language, emotional intelligence and social skills in a manner that keeps them interested and engaged, and requires their own critical thinking of discussion points which makes their learning their own, allowing them to use it beyond the classroom walls. The results I have seen in my students are quite positive. Many see me outside the classroom, and even though they are no longer my students continue to communicate with me in French. Others have decided to study abroad in a Francophone country, or have attended French events just to learn more about the culture. My students never forget how much I love to teach them, and the passion and energy I devote to their education is often translated into their passion to think and learn, to spread this knowledge around them, and that is why teaching French is my life.
