About Doruk

Hi there! I am a Computer Science PhD student who is knowledgeable about a lot of mathematical, biological and computer science-related concepts. I have experience teaching due to my teaching assistantship attempts for various computer science and machine learning courses. Additionally, in my daily life, I am conducting research in machine learning and computational biology domains, and have published 4 works in reputable journals and conferences in my field.

First and foremost, I would like to mention about one of my observations based on my experience in academia: A person might be very knowledgeable about a topic, but this does not mean that they can explain or teach the topic well. Additionally, I believe the teacher should tailor how they are explaining material based on background as well as interest of their target audience. In other words, a teacher should resonate with the student they are teaching. Additionally, I observed that people do not tend to ask questions during lectures if no one else is asking questions. However, asking the right questions is the only way to learn about something.

In light of these, I would like to help you in learning any computer science, machine learning and mathematics related topic/assignment/course by factoring in (1) what you already know - your background; (2) personal aspects you would like to share - for example if you are a visual learner or not; and (3) why you want to learn the topic of interest. If you have read my ads, you might have seen that I am requesting a single paragraph of text from you, which briefly contains the information I provided above.

Personally, I can describe myself as friendly, approachable and easygoing. Thus, there is no pressure or judgement, and you can to ask me any questions you want. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have further questions.

Finally, if you are interested about my mindset about learning things, please see the Philosophy heading below. While this is not a one-size-fits-all solution, this is what works for me. Most importantly, I believe a lot of people might benefit from it.

Best regards :)

Philosophy

I think understanding something requires us to make a reasoning about it. In turn, making reasoning about something requires us to construct a mental model of it, which is, to me, only possible by asking the right questions.

Although asking the right questions is hard, it is a learnable skill which requires interest, attention, repetition. Hence, if we repeatedly and mindfully ask questions to learn about new things in our lives, we will eventually get better in it.

From another perspective, formulating questions becomes easier if we have a solid understanding of the matter of interest. In case of learning new things, this is like a chicken-egg problem as our goal is to enhance our understanding.

Moreover, if we do not have understanding of something, I believe we, humans, implicitly try to find similarities (or repeated patterns) between the thing we want to learn about and the things we already know about. This way, we become more familiar to a foreign concept (by projecting it to things we already know) and start formulating better questions.

Finally, here is my main motivation in offering help: Learning about anything is possible under supervision and mentorship of someone who can lead the way by asking the correct questions. In this case, my goal is to be the person who will help you ask the right questions as well as understand why we are asking the question in the first place.

Briefly, I can provide you help on any material/course/topic/theory/assignment related to one of the following: probability, statistics, linear algebra and calculus. If you are interested in my help on computer science (coding, data structures, algorithms, ...) or machine learning, that also works!

I believe the target audience of this ad mostly consists of university students. However, I am happy to meet with you, regarding anything above if you think this will be beneficial. Therefore, feel free to send an inquiry if you are interested :)

Although optional, I would appreciate if you can include a brief paragraph, within your inquiry, which will provide me information about: (1) what is the material/topic you would like to get help about; (2) your familiarity with the topic - for example between 1 and 10 - 10 is our goal; and (3) optionally, some information about your background (e.g., your major).

After reading your inquiry, I will reply to you if I can help you with it or not. If I decide I can be helpful you, I would like to meet with you on Zoom (at most 30 mins) to discuss more about your expectations; explain what I can do for you; and create a lesson plan, tailored to your needs, if you would like to proceed and initiate our communication :)

PS: please check about me section for details regarding my mindset.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
