About Luke
Hello and welcome! I'm delighted that you've taken the time to visit my profile. I have a Bachelor's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I studied with Ian Swensen. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree from UdeM with Guillaume Sutre. I have had the incredible opportunity to share a stage with world-class musicians such as John Adams and Chris Potter. However, my musical journey wasn't a traditional one—I was a late starter, which led me to discover the power of efficient and effective learning techniques in order to catch up with my peers. In addition to having the privilege of learning from wonderful teachers, I've nurtured a deep interest in performance and learning psychology. Understanding how our brains process music has allowed me to continuously optimize how I learn and retain musical knowledge. I'm thrilled to share these techniques with my students, whether they are young beginners or experienced musicians seeking to expand their skills. With 8+ years teaching at various San Francisco music schools and maintaining a private studio, I've worked with students of all ages and levels. As a teacher, my philosophy centers around creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students can explore their passion for music and grow at their own pace. Below, in the next section, you can get to know me a little more as a teacher. I'm excited about the opportunity to embark on a musical journey together, and I trust that in our exploration, I will have just as much to learn from you. If you're ready to take the next step, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out for a trial lesson or to discuss your musical goals. Let's make music together!

What is your goal as a teacher? Two things that pushed me forward the most have been curiosity and passion. As such, I'm really excited when I see my students' curiosity and passion growing. Of course, when a student is improving musically and technically, I am also quite happy. (As should you!) What curriculum would you be following? Every student is unique, both in objectives and personality. Thus, the curriculum is tailored to the needs of each student. Generally speaking, the objectives would be to advance proficiency in learning attitudes, self-expression, technique, and music theory. There are many ways to teach these things, but I like to do it by adding new knowledge/skills on top of what you already know. I'm a beginner, how will we begin? You're here because you love music and really want to learn. However, that can be really difficult and intimidating. With the violin, the learning curve is very steep. As such, I highly recommend learning the piano and violin simultaneously. (I teach both!) It is easier to get your foot through the door by starting with piano. In the beginning we would focus mostly on the piano, with some very simple violin exercises that build strength and dexterity. By the time you are comfortable on the piano, you’ll have a lot of the skills necessary to have a strong start with the violin, including the skill of reading music. Depending on how much time you spend each day, it could be as soon as a month or two when we reach this point. What genres do you teach? Let me know what genres you are interested in learning! I have taught many genres including Classical, Baroque, Hindustani, and Pop. It is easiest to learn the violin and piano using a classical foundation, but we will include and learn songs that you like whenever we can! Music is not limited to classical, and there is much to learn from all genres! What are the expectations for practicing? For younger students, I love working with students who practice regularly. If parents are assisting their children with practice, I encourage sitting in the lesson so that the practicing is a continuation of the lesson throughout the week. For adult students, I am happy to practice with you during the lesson, even if it is the only time during the week. We'll certainly be serious and set goals, but with a more casual approach, sort of like a weekly drop-in yoga class.

Perfect! Luke is a very good teacher, its really nice being taught by someone so passionate and knowledgeable. Friendly and welcoming, definitely would recommend
Perfect! Luke is an amazing tutor. Not only is he a wonderful violist, but he is also an exceptional pedagogue. He is patient and takes his time to teach, discuss, and explain, even to my very young son. He is flexible and highly skilled in his field. In addition to being a violinist, he is also a pianist and excels in solfège. Teaching music comes naturally to him. I would recommend him to anyone seeking an introduction to music or more in-depth lessons.
