About Stella
Saxophone teaching is an opportunity to guide students through the rich intersection of technical discipline and creative freedom. I prioritize establishing solid fundamentals—breath support, embouchure strength, finger agility, tone control, and rhythm accuracy—to form a healthy, sustainable playing technique. Simultaneously, I foster musicality by focusing on articulation, phrasing, dynamics, and vibrato, helping students develop an expressive and nuanced sound. I incorporate music theory and ear training in a contextual, accessible way that deepens understanding and supports improvisation skills. Improvisation is introduced early as a joyful, exploratory process, gradually increasing in complexity with attention to melodic development, harmonic frameworks, and rhythmic invention. Repertoire is chosen collaboratively and includes a wide variety of styles—bebop, ballads, blues, classical, and contemporary—tailored to student preferences to maintain engagement. Technology plays an important role; I encourage recording practice sessions, using slow-downer apps, and experimenting with backing tracks to enhance learning. One memorable success was helping a student develop the confidence to lead a combo performance, blending technical skill and creative improvisation in front of an audience. I aim to create a nurturing, dynamic space where students feel supported to take risks, grow their skills, and build a lifelong love for the saxophone and music in general.

Teaching saxophone requires a delicate balance of discipline and freedom, and my approach reflects this by combining rigorous technical instruction with encouragement of individual artistic voice. I work closely with students to develop strong breath support, embouchure control, precise finger technique, and a flexible sense of rhythm. From the outset, I introduce ear training and music theory as tools to unlock improvisational skills and deeper musical comprehension.
I emphasize learning by listening to great saxophonists across jazz, funk, classical, and modern styles to inspire tone quality, phrasing, and stylistic nuance. Lessons incorporate improvisation exercises, transcription work, and creative projects like composition or arranging to stimulate musical growth and personal expression. I use technology such as recording and slow-down apps to aid practice and build self-awareness. Preparing students for performance situations—auditions, recitals, jam sessions—is an integral part of my teaching, including coaching on stage presence and confidence-building techniques.
My teaching style is supportive and student-centered, adapting pace and content to individual goals and interests. One highlight was coaching a student from beginner level to becoming a featured soloist in a regional jazz festival. I aim to cultivate not only technical proficiency but also a lifelong love for the saxophone as a powerful means of storytelling and connection.
