About Joshua
As a philosophy tutor, I prioritize each student’s unique goals, background, and interests. Whether you're enrolled in a formal course, preparing for an exam, or exploring philosophy independently, I design lessons that are relevant, engaging, and intellectually rigorous. No two students are the same, and my approach reflects that, so every session is customized to meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go.

Tailored to Each Student’s Needs and Interests
My tutoring is built entirely around the student. I begin by understanding what you're studying, what you're struggling with, and what genuinely interests you. Whether you're taking a required course, writing your first paper, or diving into philosophy out of personal passion, I adjust the pace, focus, and structure to meet you where you are. Philosophy becomes much more powerful when it's approached through your own questions and concerns, not just through abstract content.
Grounded in the History of Philosophy
My expertise in the history of philosophy allows me to create thoughtful, structured lesson plans that help you grasp both the big picture and the fine details. I draw on ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary sources to show how ideas evolve and respond to one another over time. This historical depth helps you see how Kant builds on Descartes, how Nietzsche reacts to Plato, or how existentialists like Simone de Beauvoir respond to centuries of ethical thought. Understanding this development gives students a stronger sense of how philosophy works as an ongoing conversation.
Teaching Method and Techniques
I focus on guided dialogue, careful reading, and practical skill-building. I use questions to help students develop their own arguments and spot hidden assumptions, but I also give clear, structured explanations when needed. I break down difficult texts into manageable ideas, using real-world examples and student-friendly language to help clarify even the most abstract concepts. Along the way, I work with students to improve their writing, logic, and philosophical vocabulary.
