About Premo

Derrick "Premo" Riddick Jr found his passion for music at 11. Raised in Virginia and now based in Texas, Premo has been shaped by the cultures of New York City, Suffolk, VA and SoCal as a US Navy Veteran, giving him a unique sound. As a Professional Audio Engineer, Producer, and Songwriter, he blends beats and stories like no one else. Graduating Summa Cum Laude from The Recording Conservatory of Austin (TRCoA), Premo brings both technical mastery and creative vision to every project.

As an Audio Engineer tutor, my approach is hands-on and adaptable, with a focus on real-world application and creative exploration. I aim to break down complex engineering concepts into simple, approachable steps so that my students feel empowered to experiment and find their own style within the technical framework.

Teaching Method and Techniques

My teaching style is practical and engaging. I always start with the basics, but I quickly get students involved in hands-on tasks, like adjusting EQ settings, exploring mixing techniques, or experimenting with hardware. I believe the best way to learn is by doing, so I encourage my students to ask questions, make mistakes, and explore their creative instincts. I emphasize that mastering audio engineering is as much about practice and creativity as it is about understanding the technical side.

Here’s how a typical session with me looks:

Introduction & Concept Explanation: We start by going over the main concept of the day, like mixing fundamentals or mastering workflows. I keep the theory brief to make sure we have time to dive into practical exercises.

Hands-On Application: I guide students through exercises using software or equipment, like setting up compressors, adjusting sound frequencies, or exploring signal flow.

Troubleshooting & Q&A: Problem-solving is a big part of my sessions. I want my students to build confidence in identifying and fixing issues as they work.

Practical Assignment: I’ll assign a short project to reinforce what we covered, giving students a chance to apply their skills independently.

Feedback & Improvement Tips: I end each session by giving feedback on the student’s work, along with personalized tips to help them refine their technique.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

I think what really sets me apart is my industry experience and my down-to-earth teaching style. I’m an active audio engineer, producer, and artist, so I bring a unique perspective that blends technical expertise with artistic insight. I also strive to make learning approachable—I’m here to simplify dense concepts and make them engaging. Beyond that, I share insights on what it takes to build a career in the industry, which is incredibly valuable for students who want to go beyond the technical skills.

My lessons are tailored for:

Aspiring audio engineers working toward a degree or certification in audio engineering or recording arts.
Beginners to intermediate-level learners who want to strengthen their skills in mixing, mastering, and production.
Hands-on learners who benefit from a guided but flexible approach, where they can get comfortable with both the technical and creative sides of audio engineering.

By using this practical, hands-on approach, I help students gain not only skills but confidence, so they’re ready to make an impact in the audio engineering field.
