About Brian
Hi!
I have a PhD, MS and BS from UC Berkeley. I have been tutoring math, stats and economics courses for 15+ years. I have also taught as a college professor at university, community college, and small, private liberal arts college. Academic success is largely about knowing what is being asked of you, and this is what I can help explain having been a teacher and worked individually with students in one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions for so long.

To me, tutoring is by far the most effective way to learn. More than half of the battle is gaining confidence and understanding how to read questions and what is being asked of you and this happens so much more organically in a dynamic, interactive learning environment.
My approach is both holistic and personalized -- tailored to meet the challenges facing the student. For mathematical content, for example, the aversion to math is itself as much of an obstacle as the struggle with the material. I meet everybody where they are, and build from there. Sometimes that just means a little moral support and confirmation going through the work; other times it can be more in-depth discussion of material and how it connects more broadly or even in some cases, motivational coaching.
I believe strongly in practice problems and walking through exercises to gain confidence and understand the process. This helps ground everything in pragmatic terms, but also allows for discussion of the content and how it all connects.
