About Shania
Over the last 6 years, I have had the pleasure of teaching more than 150 piano students, guiding them through a balanced curriculum that combines technical discipline with expressive artistry. I focus on building solid fundamentals such as finger independence, precise rhythm, sight-reading fluency, and technical control, ensuring that students have a strong foundation to support more advanced playing. Simultaneously, I encourage expressive musicianship through careful attention to phrasing, dynamics, tone quality, and emotional communication in their music. Music theory and improvisation are integral parts of my teaching, providing students with tools to understand musical structures and to explore their creativity. I tailor lessons to each student’s unique goals and musical tastes, whether they are drawn to classical sonatas, jazz standards, or contemporary popular music. A particularly meaningful experience was helping a student overcome their fear of performing, culminating in a confident recital debut that marked a turning point in their musical and personal growth. I advocate for structured, consistent practice and clear goal-setting to promote steady improvement and foster self-motivation. Above all, my mission is to inspire a deep, enduring love of piano and music in my students, empowering them to express themselves authentically and find joy in their musical journey.

For me, piano teaching is about fostering a lifelong relationship with music, one that’s rooted in joy, curiosity, and thoughtful growth. Every student brings a different story and learning style, which is why I customize each lesson to match their interests and strengths.
While I teach foundational skills such as sight-reading, rhythmic accuracy, articulation, and hand coordination, I ensure that students understand the “why” behind the music. Music theory is taught in an applied, approachable way—analyzing chord progressions, understanding musical form, and recognizing patterns that unlock the mystery of the page. But beyond the technical, I focus on interpretation, encouraging students to explore the character and emotional intent of each piece.
I incorporate listening assignments, creative improvisation, and even writing short musical phrases to help students think like musicians, not just players. We might discuss how a particular harmonic change affects the mood, or how phrasing can reflect the tension and release in a story. One student, initially hesitant to improvise, now writes small pieces to express how they’re feeling each week, a practice that’s become both cathartic and musically enriching. I also guide students through goal-setting—whether they aim to pass an exam, perform at a recital, or just master a favorite song—and we break those goals into manageable, motivating steps.
My teaching is structured yet flexible, rooted in trust and empathy. I want students to feel supported, challenged, and inspired. Mistakes are seen as opportunities, and each lesson is a collaborative space where discovery is celebrated. Whether a student dreams of performing, composing, or simply playing for personal fulfillment, I strive to make the piano a meaningful part of their life’s soundtrack.
