About Maria

I'm a Colombian writer with a major in Literature and a minor in Arts from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia plus an MFA in Screenwriting. I wrote two Soap Operas that were aired in more than 10 countries including the U.S. I also worked as a columnist for the Colombian Magazine “Cartel Urbano” for almost 4 years. I have published several chronicles in different Colombian newspapers and publications including “El Tiempo” and “El Espectador”; the two largest and most important newspapers in Colombia. Throughout my career as a professional writer and journalist, I have worked as a translator for both fiction and non-fiction content.

About the lesson

I usually try to set up two classes per week. One focused on grammar where we focus on the tenses and syntax structures mainly by writing and reading texts according to the student´s level. The other one focused on reading comprehension and oral skills, depending on the student´s level we pick a book and start conversations from what we read. The student has also the opportunity to start writing about what he/she understands.

I like the word ¨ojalá¨that means ¨Quiera Alá¨, it´s a blend between Spanish and arabic.
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
I am a writer so Spanish is my main tool of communication.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
The main difficulty is the lack of motivation and the most useful thing to fight against lack of motivation is the use of compelling, interesting and envolving material.

I grew up learning English as a second language back in my country and it was only until I moved to an English Speaking country that I became confident and fluent. The need to use the language or being in touch with the language every day via conversations with natives or just listening to the radio or watching tv is the fastests way for you to embrace the language and be confident.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Moving to the US helped me move forward into thinking in English and stop translating everything into Spanish.
