About Derek
I am a passionate Chess tutor with 7 years of experience teaching high school and college students. Over the years, I have guided around 300 learners, helping many of them achieve personal milestones such as winning tournaments, improving ratings, and excelling in competitive play. My approach is to make Chess both educational and inspiring, showing students how strategy, patience, and critical thinking apply on and off the board. One of my proudest moments has been seeing students who once struggled with basics grow into confident and independent players. I believe every learner has the potential to succeed with the right guidance, encouragement, and practice. My goal is not just to teach moves, but to shape stronger thinkers and problem-solvers for life.

My teaching methodology for Chess is centered on clear communication, practical learning, and strong values. I believe that students learn best when ideas are explained simply and connected to real-life examples. By using famous games, case studies, and strategic situations, I help learners understand not just the moves but also the reasoning behind them. Integrity is at the heart of my teaching, so I encourage students to play with honesty, patience, and respect for the game.
I focus on building strong foundations in openings, middlegame tactics, and endgame techniques while also teaching time management and decision-making under pressure. Every session is interactive, with discussions that allow students to share their thought process and improve step by step. I also provide personalized feedback to strengthen weak areas and boost confidence.
Besides Chess, I can guide learners in related strategic subjects that improve critical thinking and problem-solving. My goal is not only to make students better players but also sharper thinkers who can apply these skills beyond the board.
