About Travis
I have been using conversational Japanese in daily life since early 2009. I achieved N1 certification for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test in 2014 and have been working as a technical translator specializing in intellectual property since 2013. I also headed a Japanese study abroad program in Kyoto, Japan.
Since my first Japanese class in high school, I have had a deep passion for the Japanese language and culture.
Through each step of my personal journey to fluency, I spent countless hours finding the best tools, teachers, and materials to hone my Japanese skills. My goal is to guide you through the learning process to help you find materials that are interesting to you and suited to your level.
I am deeply invested in each students' progress and will do everything I can to make sure you are progressing as fast as you would like.

I have a passion for Japanese language learning. As someone who started learning Japanese as a beginner, I know the challenges and what it takes to overcome them.
Having lived in Japan for 7 years, I have a deep understanding and passion for the Japanese language and culture. I can help English speakers understand difficult nuances and hone their skills in pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, and authentic cultural communication.
My lessons are individually catered to each student, and I accept all levels of students from those with no experience all the way to studies for the highest level of the JLPT N1.
If you already have specific Japanese goals, we will work together on building a study plan to get you there. If you are just beginning and are focusing on conversation, I normally recommend working through the GENKI series together.
