About Nick

I started working in post production over 20 years ago in Los Angeles where I edited trailers for the BBC. I transitioned to commercials, promos and branded content for clients such as Nissan, Ford, Vizio and the LA Times. I am a lifelong learner and teacher. Over my career, I have been responsible for video editing, audio mixing, sound design, color correction, motion graphics and music production and I still enjoy it.

I fell in love with teaching in my late teens when I started teaching guitar at a local music store and my first job out of college was teaching Pro Tools and music production at Full Sail in Florida. I find it very rewarding to have someone finally get a concept they were struggling with. If a student has a question I can’t answer, it will probably send me on a path to figuring it out.

Our time together is YOUR time. I can teach you what you want to learn with you asking me questions about a specific tool or concept. OR, you can let me take you through step by step instructions for various scenarios.

Some examples of how I can help:

* You just bought Premiere Pro and you are completely lost. All of the videos on YouTube seem like they are speaking another language.

* You have been editing for a few years and you want to become a professional and work in a post production studio.

* You have a career and you are thinking about transitioning to work as a video editor.

* You work for a marketing company and they have decided to add video and now you are the one who has to create the content.

* You just got a job as a video editor and can do most things, but you want to be able to “phone a friend” when you run into a problem at work.

There are video editors who work by themselves and create everything that is needed. And then there are video editors that work with a team that can include creative directors, producers, sound mixers, designers and VFX artists. We can discuss what is expected of you in the edit bay. Or I can help you make a wedding video for your cousin. I'm also available to help you with Davinci Resolve, After Effects and Pro Tools.

Reach out to me with any questions and I’ll tell you if I can help you are not.

Find out more about Nick

  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a editing video?

My first experience editing video was on Avid and I was creating Behind the Scenes videos for DVDs. DVDs needed to have sales pitches on the box cover and one of them was "Bonus Content". So many movies would get footage from behind the scenes and interview the actors, the director, the VFX supervisor, etc… about a particular scene, the location, how an effect was created.
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

The internet existed when I started editing, but as the speed increased and we were able to send larger files, the move to remote editing become more and more a reality. Now we are at the start of the AI revolution and it has already disrupted at least parts of jobs. I plan to continue learning new skills and try to be as nimble as possible to stay current.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the Video Post Production world.

I'm happy to be able to work confidently in video, color, sound and motion design such that I can complete an entire project for a client if they need it. I love working with teams on a large project that could never be done by one person. But there is a lot of satisfaction in doing an entire video by yourself. I'm hoping that as AI continues to simplify certain aspects of this industry, Video Editor will still be called on as the person who puts it all together.
  • Do you have role models?

I can't say that I have role models that are names you would recognize. But there are very many colleagues of mine that I look up to and I'm in awe of their knowledge, expertise and creative flow.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

If you work in Video Post Production, you almost certainly need to be a technical person. And in a technical industry, you will inevitably run into problems that need to be solved. I was once told that sometimes you need to just "make it work" and stop trying to figure out what the problem is. The client DOES NOT care what the problem is. So if you can get from point A to point B in a quick way that doesn't sacrifice the quality of the project, do it.
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a video application who says that "Video Post Production is too complicated"?

If they are new to all of the applications and concepts, I would encourage them to stick with it and not to measure themselves against where they think they should be. If they are progressing and learning concepts, then they are moving forward and should stick with it if that is their passion.
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to video?

I love to travel and explore other cities and other cultures. I wish I would have taken a year after college to just roam, but I was too afraid I would forget everything I just learned. I can play guitar and/or produce music everyday until the day I die.
  • What makes you a Superprof in Video Post Production?

Video Post Production is the combination of creative and technical. These are two of my favorite things to think about and work within. The first job I ever had that was enjoyable was teaching guitar when I was in college and I still enjoy it today. I'm one of those who believe our public schools should pay teachers the same as doctors and lawyers. I love to teach and it is an honorable profession.
