About Zia

Hi, I’m a violin tutor with over 10 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Music in Early Music, specializing in Baroque Violin. My passion lies in folk traditions, especially Irish, Scottish, and American Old-Time fiddle styles. I help students explore the rich cultural roots of these genres through joyful, hands-on learning. I focus on teaching ornamentation, rhythmic bowing patterns, and learning by ear—just like the old folk masters did. My lessons are rooted in the tunes themselves, using repertoire-based instruction to develop both technique and musical expression. We also use folk jam tracks and drone tuners to build steady rhythm, intonation, and confidence in playing with others. Whether you’re brand new to the violin or looking to expand into folk styles, I shape each lesson to your pace and interests. My approach is flexible, creative, and encouraging. I aim to build both skill and a deep connection to the music you love. Let’s explore the violin together through the rich sounds of living folk traditions. I look forward to guiding your journey with joy and inspiration.

About the lesson

My violin teaching methodology centers on physical awareness, mental focus, and musical flow. I guide students to stay connected to their bodies through relaxed posture, balanced movement, and deep, steady breathing while playing. This helps reduce tension and supports both comfort and sound quality.

We focus on developing a light, responsive left-hand technique and smooth, expressive bowing. I encourage students to visualize musical patterns, phrasing, and finger placements to enhance memory and creativity. Each lesson is designed to support both technical skill and artistic expression.

I pay close attention to how students feel as they learn—emotionally and physically. For those who thrive with emotional safety, clear structure, or imaginative learning, I offer steady encouragement and flexible strategies. We work together to build healthy practice routines that prevent strain and support long-term growth.
