You might not know this, but New York City has a very proud and significant Dutch heritage. Before we knew the city as New York, it was named New Amsterdam. That is because the first explorers ever to settle its shores were Dutch.
Of course, the colony eventually traded hands with the British; the rest is history. Although much of that earlier Dutch heritage is not immediately visible today, you will realize that Dutch influence is everywhere with some digging.
For instance, Wall Street was named after a wall constructed by the Dutch to keep British invaders out. Similarly, like Onderdonk House, many original Dutch buildings can be seen around the region.
So naturally, learning Dutch is a passion followed by many living in the big apple. And what better way to get started in your learning journey than by hiring a private tutor? Turn to Superprof and get started!
You probably think Dutch is tricky to learn because of how complicated it sounds. However, for native English speakers, it is a surprisingly easy language to master.
If you still have difficulty maneuvering through your Dutch lessons, a one-on-one tutoring session from Superprof can help.
Dutch and English have very similar Germanic roots. As a result, their core grammatical structure is the same. Therefore, it is quick and easy for a native English speaker to follow.
However, with longer Dutch sentences, the word order becomes complex and does not follow English grammar rules. Of course, you can eventually memorize these different rules with some practice.
Besides, your grammar does not need to be perfect. As long as you get your message across, a few errors here and there are harmless.
As mentioned, Dutch can be straightforward for a native English speaker to learn. Albeit, some aspects of it are tricky.
For example, many English speakers struggle to get their pronunciation correct. There are many unique consonant combinations with unique sounds. Words like sjaal (scarf) are pronounced "sh-aal" because the "sj" sound is considered "sh" in Dutch.
Memorizing different pronunciations is understandably tricky for somebody unfamiliar with the language. However, with some practice and the right tutor, you can speak Dutch fluently in no time.
As with any other language, Dutch has some unique words and terms that cannot be translated accurately. These words communicate ideas and senses that do not have a parallel in English.
Mierenneuker
This word describes somebody who is very finicky and anal-retentive. However, its literal translation would be "somebody who gets cozy with ants."
Apenstaartje
The Dutch call the "@" symbol apenstaartje. Funnily enough, it translates to "monkey's tail," which is an adorable name for the "@" symbol.
Uitwaaien
In literal terms, Uitwaaien means to go out on a windy day. The idea is to clear one's head and clear our minds by strolling in the breeze. Of course, it sounds like an enjoyable activity we all must have indulged in at some point. The Dutch happen to have a precise term for it.
Hè Hè
This term is commonly used in Dutch to represent a sense of relief or comfort. The best use of this word would be to describe the feeling of satisfaction from resting after a long and tiring day.
Now that you know how easy and fun learning Dutch can be, it's about time you enrolled in professional classes.
New York has everything from language learning centers to institutions for someone looking to learn a second language. But why bother putting up with subway delays and paying exorbitant fees when you can learn Dutch from the comfort of your home – with Superprof.
