Take Dutch Lessons in the United States

If you aren’t very familiar with the language, Dutch is actually one of the top 15 languages in 3 states in the US: Delaware, Indiana, and Ohio. Although the number of Dutch speakers used to be much higher, learning it can still come to be really useful. In fact, Dutch is one of the easier languages to learn as an English speaker as it’s a mix between German and English. Better yet, if you’re someone that loves to travel or wishes to one day find a job in the Netherlands then don’t hesitate to start your studies. Learning a new language can be such a beautiful experience as it opens you to a whole new culture and world outside the one we’re used to in the US. And let’s not forget that Dutch is spoken by about 25 million people, so you’ll be able to communicate and meet an entirely new group of people. The best part is that you don’t really have to become fluent, it’s also a fun language to listen to as well. Dutch tends to have very funny pronunciations as a lot of the words have tricky sounds, but it’s still one of the smoothest languages in the world. Who knows you might like it more than your first language, so never limit yourself to just knowing one!

Learning Dutch Might Be Easier Than You Think

As mentioned above Dutch is a fairly easy language to learn due to its similarities to English. However, it is a dialect that comes with very unique and fun sounds, so it will take some getting used to at first. In fact, you’ll be surprised to learn that you actually already know some Dutch words you just weren’t aware that’s where they originated from. That’s because a lot of English words were initially used in the Netherlands, and today you can find about 1,500 Dutch words in the English dictionary. Unlike other cultures, Dutch people actually like it when non-speakers try to speak Dutch. To them, it’s a compliment that you are making the effort to learn the language, so it will be fun for you to practice with Dutch speakers. Just by learning the basic vocabulary, grammar, and a few key phrases you’ll be able to start up a basic conversation. And the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Learn Dutch in Less Than A Year

On average it takes a native English speaker about 24 weeks to become fluent which is 600 hours of class & lessons. Some people aim to learn it in just 3 months, it all really depends on the time you put in and your efforts. If you’re learning for fun then great, but if you’re learning to become fluent then even better. Try not to focus too much on how long it will take you and instead enjoy the process by practicing any chance you can get. You can literally spend years learning a language and still find new words you haven’t come across before. I mean think of it, even when English is your first language you’ll still find yourself learning new words every day. Learning a language is endless because there is always something new to learn and it’s a very rewarding experience. Whether you learn to speak it, write it, or simply listen to it you are exposing yourself to a whole new culture and that alone is beautiful.

Where To Learn To Speak Dutch

You can learn to speak Dutch in so many different ways, the first one is by working with a private instructor. Superprof for example helps beginner students like yourself get connected with a US-based Dutch teacher that can give you one-on-one lessons. The best part of having a private teacher is that you get to work at your own pace and time without feeling the stress of falling behind on your studies. Our goal at Superprof is for you to enjoy your education instead of it becoming overwhelming.  However, Dutch is something you can also teach yourself in your free time. You can do this by buying textbooks or checking one out at your local library that teaches you basic words and phrases. There are also apps like Duo Lingo that provide fun tools and games that you can try instead of endlessly scrolling on social media. You can even go to a local group in your city where Dutch speakers get together to converse. Our best advice is to not forget to take advantage of the many resources around you!
