How Many Styles of Martial Arts Is There?

Martial arts are a set of sports whose objective is to subdue or defend oneself in hand-to-hand fights without any type of weaponry. In this sense, they are sports in which combat techniques are perfectly delimited and regulated, which differentiates them from simple street fights. In a martial art, not everything goes; some codes must always be respected.

The characteristics of martial arts have been forged throughout history, maintaining certain values of codes and aesthetics. Its origin is not entirely clear, as there are representations of fights in both Egypt and China dating back to 2,000 BC!

Be that as it may, the concept of martial art as we know it today was born in China in the 19th century. From there, it has evolved into different forms, reaching its peak in Japan. Western culture has also adopted them, giving rise to a huge variety of types of martial arts.

But what are the best martial arts?

Here’s a list of the most important styles of Martial Arts:

  1. Kung fu (Chinese boxing) is, along with karate, the most popular of all the martial arts; punches, strikes, throws, body twists, grabs, jumps, falls, dodges, and somersaults are used. These movements include more techniques that are executed with the open hand, such as holds and cuts, than those used in Karate.
  2. Karate is of Japanese origin. The objective is to defeat the opponent using punches and kicks performed firmly. It is one of the martial arts that instills more values of discipline, control of emotions, and respect for the opponent.
  3. In Jujitsu (Japanese for 'soft'), holds, chokes, takedowns, trips, holds and strikes are used. The techniques are aimed at deflecting or controlling an attack.
  4. Judo is a popular form of fighting developed from Jujitsu in 1882 by Dr. JigorĹŤ KanĹŤ, a Japanese educator. Like Jujitsu, it attempts to harness the strength of the attacker to one's advantage. Its techniques encompass takedowns and grappling.
  5. Aikido, like Judo, derived from Jujitsu in the last century. In Aikido an attack is avoided with fluid circular movements; the opponent can then be thrown to the ground with immobilizing keys.
  6. Taekwondo is a type of fighting system that originated in Korea, involving strikes, punches, and evasive techniques. Famous primarily for its punches, Taekwondo incorporates jumping with characteristic maneuvers called flying punches.
  7. Sumo, a popular Japanese combat sport, pits two huge men against each other as they try to knock the opponent out of the ring or make him touch the ground below the knees.

How Many Belts Can You Earn in Martial Arts?

The amount of martial arts belts is seven. Each martial art belt represents a part of your process and learning and it symbolizes your stage as you train to be the best.

Here is the martial arts belt order:

1. White: belt for the novice, this stage symbolizes innocence or purity as it begins a new path that will not be easy to assimilate at the beginning.

2. Yellow: a belt that indicates discovery, since, unlike the white belt, the practitioner already has a slightly longer journey in martial arts where he begins his stage of discovery of new techniques.

3. Orange: means illusion, here the practitioner begins to have a certain tendency of attachment to the martial art which generates in the practitioner a state of illusion towards his future expectations.

4. Green: it can be said that it is in an intermediate stage in the learning process so it is considered in a state of hope to reach the future belts.

5. Blue: means the idealistic stage, where the practitioner already has a fairly complete notion of the philosophy of the martial art, accepts it, and defends it.

6. Brown: this is a stage where the practitioner begins to be on the great path of knowledge and where he has to go to the teaching of the novices of the group.

7. Black: this is a new stage but it is not the final one, since new learning and teaching processes begin.
