If you are looking for a new and exciting hobby then swing dancing is the perfect activity for you as it requires a lot of lifts, spins, and flips. It’s widely known for being a very lively and upbeat form of dance that is thrilling to both the dancers and the spectators. Swing dance was born in the 1920s when it originated in Harlem, New York with Afro-American roots, and the initial swing dances were the Charleston and the Lindy Hop.Â
The best part of all is that it’s a very freeing style of dancing that even gives dancers the creative freedom to make it their own along the way, especially if you’re dancing with an encouraging partner. On top of that dancing is a form of exercise that will release endorphins and happy hormones into your body that will light up your mood. Lastly, it’s beginner-friendly so don’t feel scared to try it if you aren’t a good dancer. The only requirement for swing dancing is having a positive attitude and having a good time!
Learning how to swing dance will be an exciting endeavor as it will introduce you to many different styles of music that you might really enjoy. This includes a lot of modern music, but also a lot of great classics or hits from the 1920s. You might want to check out Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Sing Sing Sing, or Strings of Pearls in order for you to get an idea of the beat and pace of swing.
Now if you really want to convince yourself to take a few lessons, simply do some research on the roaring twenties which was known for its lavish parties and endless dancing. You can even watch the famous scene in The Great Gatsby movie featuring Leonard DiCaprio where they introduce his character during one of his lavish parties. Everyone in the scene is swing-dancing to upbeat music and partying the night away, so trust me when I say you’ll want to join the festivities.
The main reason why you should learn to swing is for you to get out, be social, meet people, and live your life! Swing dancing really does attract people from all walks of life, so it will give you the opportunity to mingle and dance with all kinds of people. Having a community to connect with and dance can be very healing and a great way to elevate your life.
Better yet, dancing is a great way to improve your fitness, coordination, rhythm, balance, body, and even spatial awareness. Lindy Hop and Collegiate Shag for example are usually fast-paced and physical so it will raise your heart rate and increase your blood flow. Solo Jazz and Charleston will in turn help you improve your body awareness and coordination. And of course, the dancing, music, and memorizing step will help build new neurological connections in the brain to help keep it active and healthy.
If you are truly serious about Swing Dancing and want to fully commit to learning the craft then yes we suggest you hire a dance instructor. Not only will it make your experience a lot more fulfilling, but you’ll also be taught by an expert that will help you develop good techniques. Essentially you’ll be giving yourself the opportunity to succeed and see real progress during your dancing journey.
Think of it as if you are preparing for a season of dancing with the stars where you’ll be meeting your dance partner that is also going to be teaching you every single dance. They are they to guide you along the way and help you break out of your shell and shine. Besides it’s always great to have a dance partner that is committed to helping you develop your dancing skills and providing you with valuable feedback.
