About Alaina
My name is Alaina. I relocated to North Carolina in 2022 and have sought more flexible options to keep working with students outside of the classroom. Previously, I taught as a Government and Financial Literacy teacher for high school seniors. I love to work with high school aged students and up discussing and expanding their knowledge on some of my favorite subjects. I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a B.A. in History, a minor in Political Science, and my secondary education licensure for Social Studies - meaning that I do have the education and licensure to teach History, Government, Econ, Geography, and more. Currently, I am pursuing an M.A. in Public Policy from Eastern Illinois University. I love pursuing creative outlets like photography, graphic design, crafting, and DIY. I can go from teaching the branches of government, to making pet portraits, to refinishing furniture, to repairing the dryer. While I have a passion for teaching my content area, what I miss most about teaching full time is the relationships I built with my students. I look forward to working with new students as I help educate them on some of my favorite topics

The most important step in creating lessons is meeting with the student and fully understanding their stated needs as well as assessing strengths and weaknesses in the subject area they're concerned with. From there I will work with them on actual assignments they have in school/college, and/or can create informative and engaging content with assignments to practice and strengthen these skills/content knowledge. I prioritize building relationships with my students and creating content they actively participate in. When creating informative content, I like to gamify my "lectures" (notes). When creating assignments, I prioritize real-world uses and content that engages with the student's interests and future pursuits.
