About Dave

I have been teaching pre-college, and college classes in 3-D Computer Animation and Video Production for 3 years! I teach around 15 students a session to individual instruction focusing on the digital to physical realm. For example, I have my students scan physical objects and digitally place them in a photograph using Photoshop and Maya, a foundation for architectural renderings; emphasizing the importance of simultaneously learning multiple programs in order to understand the flow of a professional studio.

My work and my teaching methods are interwoven; many of my student projects are based on my own artistic practice, in which I make installations that incorporate sculpture and 3-D Animation. I teach the basics of these skills, focusing on how these media can intertwine to create complex installations. Along the way, I make a point to show students a wide variety of different artworks, from commercial studios like Pixar, to Jacoby Satterwhite’s mediated, otherworldly spaces.

My classes are broken up into lectures, tutorials, discussion, lab time, screenings, and student presentations. I first assess my student’s diverse technical skill-set before deciding how to begin all on the same level, meeting them wherever they are it in a “come as you are” environment. I then start with general tutorials from which I devise projects with clear directives, using the aforementioned tutorials as a map.

For one of my projects, I give students an acronym from which they are to generate a set of sentences. Their task is then to illustrate them, no matter how absurd or humorous, inserting an element of chance, which sensitizes the student to how many ways they can solve creative problems. Meanwhile, the assignment enables me to spend more one-on-one time understanding my students’ individual learning proclivities.

The openness of these sorts of projects invites more critical discussions. As an undergraduate student, I was struck by how separate technical and conceptual projects can be, which is why I design mini-projects to propel the students to have more agency to use certain skills learned in demos. For example, in my 3-D model-building workshop, I have the students follow a series of modeling demos. I then have the student pick an object to model, to test their practiced skills. I construct my assignments chronologically and cumulatively, so that by the end of the semester the students fully realize a final animation and possess a firm grasp of the Animation Pipeline, and the same goes for teaching drawing and sculpture.
