About Ryan

I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computational Solid Mechanics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. My journey to graduate school was fueled by a deep passion for mathematics and engineering, both of which I’ve cultivated over years of academic study and hands-on experience. My undergraduate experience at Michigan Tech (Class of 2016) laid the groundwork for my understanding of mechanical engineering, while my subsequent role as a manufacturing engineer at Nexteer Automotive sharpened my practical skills and problem-solving abilities.

During my time at Nexteer, I was fortunate to work alongside talented engineers to address complex mechanical challenges in manufacturing. One notable project involved diagnosing and preventing catastrophic equipment failures by using predictive diagnostics, a process that involved high-speed data acquisition, digital signal processing, and system optimization. It was this experience that cemented my love for tackling complex problems in engineering.

Mathematics, too, has been a crucial part of my journey. Despite not being a "natural" mathematician, my passion for the subject has driven me to continuously improve my understanding and skills. Even while working full-time in industry, I enrolled in additional math courses at Saginaw Valley State University, supplementing my engineering background with a more comprehensive understanding of advanced mathematical concepts. This dedication to continuous learning has shaped my approach to both engineering and tutoring.

As a tutor with over 4 years of experience, I have developed a teaching style that is patient, supportive, and focused on making difficult concepts more approachable. I understand how challenging math can be because I’ve been there myself, working through those same struggles. What sets me apart is my ability to relate to students who may feel overwhelmed or frustrated with math, and to guide them towards not just better grades, but a deeper understanding of the subject. Whether it's helping middle school students with algebra or guiding college students through calculus and differential equations, I bring a passion for math and a commitment to student success to every lesson.

My tutoring approach is centered around the student. I break down difficult ideas into smaller pieces, helping students gain confidence through understanding rather than memorization.

I focus on clear explanations and practical examples. I encourage active participation, ensuring that students engage with the material. Problem-solving is a big part of my teaching method, as I believe that working through problems helps solidify understanding.

A typical lesson begins with a review of previous material, followed by an introduction to the new topic. We then work on practice problems together, and I provide support where needed.

What sets me apart is that I’m not a natural mathematician. I understand how difficult math can be because I’ve had to work through those struggles myself. I know what it’s like to face obstacles in learning math, and I use that experience to help students overcome their own challenges

My lessons are aimed at students ranging from middle school to college level. I offer support in Precalculus, Algebra, Linear Algebra, Calculus I, Differential Equations, and other core math courses.
