About Kevin
I was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. Though I am a mechanical engineering by training, my experience as a peer tutor during my undergrad years propelled me into education. After completing my bachelor's degree at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, IN, I enrolled in a mechanical engineering Ph.D. program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. I was fortunate enough to take a class on course design and pedagogy from one of the coauthors of a seminal text in the field while I was there, but I eventually dropped out without completing my degree.
After grad school, I founded a business, Brennan Tutoring, which I continue to operate, and began to focus exclusively on education as a career. I did some part-time work at a learning center to gain experience working with K12 students and develop new workshops. I moved to St. Louis in 2015, where I continued to tutor while also teaching classes and workshops at a local middle school and university. I have a master's degree in learning experience design and educational technology from WGU. I am currently a part-time faculty member at WashU, where I teach math courses targeted at engineering students.
Outside of my professional work, I am a father of two young boys and a lover of music, cars, basketball, disc golf, and tabletop gaming.
I am passionate about the learning process, and I have tens of thousands of hours of relevant experience; I also regularly attend education conferences and keep up-to-date on the research in the field. I am excited to help all of my students succeed, and I look forward to meeting you.

Tutoring is personal; I adapt my teaching approach on a student-by-student basis. Generally I prefer to check for understanding often and to tackle topics from the outside in. For example, if you'd like to explore a new section of material, we'd likely begin with a discussion of what the material means and why it matters before any calculations are performed. From there it's mostly repetition and reflection. This may seem vague, but the critical advantage of a tutoring environment (as opposed to group or classroom instruction) is that it can and should be tailored to the individual student! I draw upon my training in educational theory and tens of thousands of hours of experience when setting strategies for each learner.

Kevin has been tutoring my 18 yo son for the last 7-8 years in math. I cannot imagine how my son would have managed at his very challenging college prep school without Kevin’s help. My son has had tutoring from others for writing and ACT/SAT prep, but has just really clicked with Kevin and finds his explanations very helpful.
Kevin has always been very reliable with their scheduled times. During the pandemic, they switched to online tutoring. My son prefers this and it will really help having had this form of instruction with Kevin as he will continue to tutor my son when he attends University of Pennsylvania this fall.
To Kevin, the biggest of thanks. You are the best at what you do.View more recommendations
