About John
I've been a professor of mathematics here in Gainesville for about 15 years; teaching primarily at Santa Fe College and the University of Florida. In that time I've had the pleasure of teaching students from a wide range of backgrounds; from middle school and high school students to men and women in their 50s and 60s coming back to complete a degree. I've taught the full range of classes in mathematics from basic arithmetic and algebra all the way to advanced calculus. And the one thing I've learned from almost two decades of teaching math is that *everyone* can be taught; *everyone* can learn to do math well!

The best and most effective way to learn is always in a 1-on-1 situation with a teacher. Sometimes it's simply a matter of correcting a student's algebra work or filling in gaps in their knowledge. But more often it comes down to correcting a student's way of thinking and studying; or explaining the concepts and meaning behind the numbers. I take a comprehensive approach---showing students not only how to work a problem but how to think through the problem. I show them how to interpret and translate the vocabulary of math so that they can first understand what some of the more confusing questions are asking. I then show them the ultimate goal of the problem; the goal they should be working towards in each step they take along the way. Understanding both the meaning and process allows the student to apply the concepts to different problems. It allows them to adjust and tailor the process to each problem rather than memorizing a step-by-step procedure and trying to blindly repeat it on every problem without thinking. There's a big difference between tutors that can come up with the answer to a problem for you and tutors that can teach you how to work out the problems yourself; how to think through the problems. If you're going to spend the time and money to get help, get the right kind of help. Contact me today and let's get started! John, has been tutoring my daughter several years now, and I honestly can’t imagine how she would have ever gotten through those tougher Math classes without him!
He’s extremely patient with my daughter and instinctively knows how to get through to her. Something no one else has been able to do! Some people are natural teachers, and understand that not all students learn the same. His patience and genuine kindness means he’s willing to go the extra mile to make sure he teaches in a way necessary for the student to learn.
Believe me when I say he’s the best! So, if you’re looking for a kind, soft spoken, Math wizard, I promise you will not be disappointed.Amazing tutoring! Really helped my learn the material rather than just memorize, and was the only reason I passed my math class! 11/10 would recommend him as a tutor!
Mr. Lee is an exceptional math tutor. He has a passion for teaching that really shows and a talent for explaining complex concepts in a way that's easy to understand. I'm a freshman at UF and I was in a bind. After working with another tutor and still failing the third exam, I needed a high B on my Calculus final just to pass the class; and the final was cumulative. John worked with me almost every day for 2 weeks. I ended up getting a B+ on the final and passing the class! I wish I'd found him sooner. I'm convinced I could have gotten an A in the class if I'd been working with Mr. Lee all semester. I highly recommend him if you need help with math.
I was extremely lucky to find John Lee. My daughter is in 8th grade and is in advanced gifted Algebra 1. She had an F in the class. She is a very smart girl, but for several reasons she wasn't able to learn in class. She has ADHD and dyslexia and struggled with keeping up with taking notes and paying attention to the lesson at the same time. I believe that the teaching style was also not a good fit for her. We found John and he started tutoring her for 2 hours every Sunday at the downtown library in a private room. Within 2 weeks, my daughter was up to a C. I have sat in on her tutoring each week. My daughter instantly responded to his teaching style. The way that he teaches math is so that she really understands the principals and not just how to get the correct answer. He has a perfect personality for teaching because he is kind and makes you feel completely comfortable. When he tutors my daughter, she is able to stay focused and on track and she gets a lot accomplished without feeling stressed out. When I have listened to him teach my daughter I have thought that I wished I had a teacher like him when I was in school. He has been a huge blessing to our family.
