About Tom

I have a first in maths from Oxford (MMath) and integrate this into a holistic approach to learning and well-being. I find that it is very important to create an environment in which the student is comfortable expressing themselves freely and enjoying their learning. This creates a solid platform for a deeper and more creative approach to the subject and learning generally. Above all, it is beneficial to adapt to the needs of each individual student to help them reach their particular goals, both subject-related and in other ways, such as confidence or anything else that they may be.

Current and former maths students range from Year 1 up to university level and I also have a broad range of general experience: I have tutored and taught in various settings in the UK, Nepal and Spain (in mainstream schools and as a teaching assistant in various types of special schools; as a rowing coach; and as an English as a Foreign Language teacher). I have also done a broad selection of other work, including as a lawyer at a leading city law firm and researcher on business ethics. I enjoy teaching students at a range of abilities, from those struggling with number bonds and times tables at primary level, to those taking GCSE and A level or undertaking scholarship or maths competition work. I am well-placed to help adult-learners with maths aptitude tests. I have extensive experience in teaching primary maths and this experience working towards understanding and intuition for the fundamentals of maths also means that I am able to ensure that students at later levels have solid mathematical foundations in place. In my teaching, I emphasise general approaches such as developing pattern spotting; how best to interpret, understand and solve worded questions; how working can be used to best effect and other such techniques.

The areas of maths I particularly specialise in include:
- all forms of confidence boosting in maths
- all primary level maths
- GCSE and Additional Mathematics (GCSE)
- A level
- scholarship entry
- work towards maths competitions
- aptitude tests

Maths tutor in London. I teach almost all of my lessons online, generally by Zoom. I encourage students to use an iPad with pen, or a tablet (e.g. Wacom or XP-pen), so that we can share a whiteboard during lessons and I can see working out as it is done and be 'inside' each student's thought processes.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first did maths tutoring at the age of 17 and have been a full-time private maths tutor since 2013 so I have thousands of hours of experience. I have done teaching in a big range of settings too: English teaching in a village in the mountains in Nepal for 6 months before university, teaching assistant in a range of schools including for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, English teaching in Madrid and student teacher at the Institute of Education in London, including placements at three schools.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love the challenge of providing a framework for understanding for my students, within which they can enjoy the satisfaction of gaining new knowledge and insight in the subject and then working on problems and getting 'right answers' - it's nice in maths that you are either right or wrong!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My main maths tutor at Oxford really cared about his students and went above and beyond to help us. That was an extremely inspiring example for anyone thinking of going into teaching!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Kindness, patience, ability to explain difficult topics in creative and accessible ways, and organisation.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My Oxford maths tutor would often say we should 'follow your nose' when doing difficult maths problems: a dog following a scent doesn't yet know where its end destination is but by going from clue to clue the end can be reached! Alongside that, proper strategies for question-reading, working and of course topic-specific understanding, insight and intuition are things I develop with my students.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

As a maths tutor, there are always new opportunities for honing the best explanation for any given point and for tailoring it to each individual student. And there is always room for gathering and designing new resources to help students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Other than teaching and maths I love listening to music and playing the piano. People are always telling me that maths and music go together. I think pattern-spotting is so important for maths and I suppose that when listening to music that's quite a lot of what our brain is doing. I'm also passionate about social justice and the environment.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I think proof of 'Superprof'-ness has to come from results. Please read my reviews!
