About Keara
I’m Keara Friel, a Parsons School of Design Fashion graduate and a current fashion design mentor at Rockaway Design Consulting, where I support young designers in building portfolios that reflect not just technical ability, but strong conceptual narratives. My background combines studio craftsmanship with a deep commitment to sustainable design. My work explores biodegradable materials, regenerative systems, upcycling, and the intersection of fashion and nature. I specialize in experimental textile manipulation, natural dyeing, and working with handcrafted techniques like beading and weaving. Through my mentorship and personal practice, I help students design with intention—focusing on not only what we make, but how and why we make it. Whether you're just beginning your design journey or refining your creative direction, I’ll meet you where you are and help you grow.

My lessons are tailored for aspiring fashion designers who want to build meaningful, future-forward work. I’m Keara Friel, and I teach with a focus on sustainability, storytelling, and craft. Whether you're developing a portfolio, exploring material experimentation, or learning foundational patternmaking skills, I’ll guide you with a balance of conceptual depth and hands-on practice.
Each lesson is shaped around your goals. A typical session might include:
Developing a mood board or narrative concept
Experimenting with sustainable techniques like natural dyeing, upcycling, or biodegradable materials
Practicing handcraft skills like beading, surface embellishment, or experimental textile manipulation
Exploring draping and patternmaking methods to bring ideas into form
Reviewing and refining portfolio projects with personalized feedback
I work with high school and college-level students, as well as emerging designers preparing for fashion school applications or refining their creative direction. I bring in references from fashion history, nature, and emotional storytelling to help you create design work that feels personal and powerful.
Whether you're interested in fashion as a career or as a creative outlet, I’m here to help you build both your skills and your voice.
