About Seren

Hello! I'm Seren Smith, a passionate and dedicated tutor specializing in math and programming. With my ongoing PhD studies in Earth Systems and a Masters in Geoinformation Sciences at George Mason University , plus a strong foundation in Statistical and Data Sciences from Smith College, I bring a rich academic background to each tutoring session.

My approach to teaching is rooted in real-world applications, ensuring that each concept in math and programming is not only understood but also seen in its practical use. I believe in a hands-on approach, where learning is interactive and tailored to individual needs. My experience in Python, SQL, and GIS has not only honed my technical skills but also enriched my teaching methods, allowing me to offer a unique perspective that bridges theory with actual industry practices.

Mentorship is at the heart of my teaching philosophy. Having led a mentorship program and worked extensively as a Graduate Research Assistant, I've developed a knack for breaking down complex topics into easy-to-understand segments. This experience has equipped me with the patience and skill to guide students at various levels, from high schoolers grappling with algebra to college students navigating advanced programming languages.

I'm here to help you build confidence in your math and programming abilities, whether you're preparing for exams, working on a project, or looking to enhance your professional skills. My goal is to make learning an enjoyable and enriching experience, and I'm committed to supporting you every step of the way on your educational journey.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My tutoring journey started in high school when, during an AP Statistics project, I noticed a significant problem in my school: after surveying half the student body, 44% of my peers lacked adequate internet access to complete their assignments. So, I helped open a tutoring center in my high school where I volunteered most days after school. It was because of that AP Statistics project I did that I was drawn to tutoring math-there was a special feeling whenever I saw a topic "click" for someone, and I knew I wanted to pursue it.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach math, statistics, and some programming. Basically, the tools that help people understand systems, solve problems, and ask smarter questions. I love showing students the "why" behind a formula or walking through how math actually powers real-world tech and decision-making. I'm less fond of topics that emphasize rote memorization without context, as context is critical to understanding, but even then, I try to make them meaningful.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes-more than one. I've had mentors who modeled patience, resilience, and genuine belief in their students. When I was at Smith College, my undergraduate advisor taught me to not be afraid to start over if a problem became too interwoven and complex, that sometimes it just takes a fresh start and a fresh set of eyes. That encouragement stuck with me and now shapes how I tutor others.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience is huge, but so is adaptability. Every student learns differently, and a good tutor listens before they explain. You also need clarity, curiosity, and a bit of humility, because teaching is a two-way process. I learn from my students all the time.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember tutoring fifth graders with NHS in high school, and one of my students was a "problem" child. I was warned he wouldn't pay attention and would be all over the place, but I didn't let that deter me. I turned learning into a game for him, challenging him with "races" to solve problems against me on the whiteboard, and showed him some websites like Khan Academy. Within two weeks, this fifth grade "problem child" who "hated math" was doing Algebra II concepts for fun on his own, after his homework was caught up.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I've had my share of imposter syndrome-especially early on, navigating advanced STEM spaces as someone who didn't always feel like I "fit the mold." It took time to build confidence, and that experience helps me now when students feel overwhelmed or behind. I get it. I've been there.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Mentorship. Whether it's through math, data science, or career planning, I love helping people bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be. I also have a soft spot for atmospheric science and environmental data, which blends my passion for science with my commitment to social good.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

    questions :-P)?
I meet students where they are. I take my academic background and technical skills and translate them into something approachable, empowering, and actually enjoyable. It's not just about knowing the material but about caring enough to make it click for someone else.
