  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

When the pandemic hit us, in order to survive the rough time, I was going through, I put myself into the process of thinking about what to do. ¨. Weeks before everything went off, I heard a friend of mine talking about teaching Spanish to foreigners and I got interested in this job of hers. By then, it was just an idea of something else I could do in the future when I feel more prepared. Due to that, I majored in educational sciences with a specialization in educational advising and didactics, just needed to get immersed in language teaching. But, by that moment, there was no time to feel more prepared. So, I decided to invest my savings in certificates and training as a language teacher, and a year later I was already sending resumes to different schools and creating profiles on different platforms. I think it was one of the scariest decisions I took, but definitely one of the best.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I love languages as I have studied English and a bit of German, it amazes me how we acquire languages and the mechanisms we all used to learn them. Also, somehow, all my jobs were deeply related to language learning. Therefore, early in my training as a professor in educational sciences, I got interested in these areas, first as an educational advisor for English teachers, and then as a language teacher. Realizing the improvements or advances of the students while learning never stops amusing me. Doesn’t matter the strategies and pieces of advice I give them, they always find their own path to language acquisition. Knowing that I'm not just teaching them Spanish, but actually helping them to learn as a strategic competence due to the independence they develop over time, gratifies me more than I thought it would.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a Superprof?

I think what makes most of the language teachers a Superprof is that we all were once students or language learners, and we struggled with finding the right ways to accomplish our goals in the easiest, fastest, and most effective way. Then we grow up, and we realize there is no such thing as the easiest, fastest, and most effective way of learning languages because a language is a really complex construction that takes time to assimilate; what we can do is make it more intuitive, interactive, motivational, experiential, and context-based; which are the things that drive my methodology no matter the ages, learning purpose, and background in the language.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Never thought of this as a real thing for me, I come from a home where both of my parents were teachers, so I guess you always get something when it is a family thing; but especially my mother, who was a Spanish literature teacher for elementary schools, was the one that pushed me into languages and literature. Even though I was into math and sciences still in high school we had this great literature professor that could actually take you on a trip into the book, the history, and the intentions behind the language. There is when I started to notice the major influence of language on me and my learning pathways, and today I'm really thankful for his influence.
  • What are your keys to success?

To try, it does not matter if it didn’t end up as well as we wanted, to try is always a success. I constantly tell my students, especially young ones, that in language learning making mistakes is not seen as a failure but as starting point to mastering the language. So, make as many mistakes as you can, and don’t be afraid of misspeaking and not knowing the correct structure, native and other speakers are really empathetic about this. Seize the opportunities for interaction, let them correct you, ask as many questions as you want, create your own language immersion; and always keep this in mind, we -natives- make mistakes too, don’t let them push you away from communicating with others.
