About Ryan
I'm originally from British Columbia, Canada, but I grew up moving around all over North America, and became somewhat obsessed with linguistics through interacting with others. For Japanese, I spent a little more than three years teaching English in Akita (in northern Japan) before starting my PhD in the US. While doing my PhD research, I took students to Osaka every summer for an intensive language exchange there, and now I teach Japanese at a university in the Southeastern US. My research focuses on how language learners acquire new sounds and sound systems (we call it "second language phonology" or "L2 phonology"), but I think Japanese is a particularly fascinating language in many respects. Whatever you're interested in about the language or the culture, the rabbit hole really does go as deep as you're willing to follow it down, and I thoroughly enjoy exploring it with others.

My goal is to help people build intuitions for how languages work and why so that they can:
- Express themselves freely
- Produce their own original content
- Understand content they haven't necessarily studied before, and
- Find enjoyment and insight from another culture
I research language acquisition in my "day job," so I'm quite comfortable with the fancy jargon if people like that, but I believe that language can and should be explained as simply as possible with examples people can connect to emotionally, and ideally, examples that show what learners want to say themselves.
A typical lesson would open with a few minutes of open conversation and a review of exercises or work students have brought with them. We'd then ask and answer questions about that or about other things you've noticed and are curious about, and then I'd give a few examples to probe the next target and show what that would enable you to do. For beginners and intermediate learners, I would use existing teaching materials, but as you become more advanced, we would mostly rely on authentic examples to learn from.
