As a teacher I am able to choose best content among the variety of available resources such as professional textbooks, demonstration experiments, as well as my personal experience as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate physics courses at the physics department of University of Kentucky. I can also adapt different methods of teaching depending on the students' perspective since students seeking engineering careers have different needs compared to students seeking medical related careers. On the other hand, I love to teach since it gives me a feeling of pleasure since I can transfer my knowledge to students and they can understand phenomena in physics they were not aware of.
Personal interaction with my students is one of the most important aspects of my teaching. Familiarity with my students is crucial to the development of a good rapport with them. I make a great effort to know their names, majors and interests. I am open to answering all of their questions carefully and I am eager to schedule many question and answer sessions for them specifically before their tests. I mainly use Socratic methods to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions. I make myself available outside the classroom by encouraging students to come to office hours, I schedule one-on-one appointments whenever necessary in addition to office hours if students have conflicting schedules, and I use email extensively to communicate with my students. I have great respect for the individuality of each student. I strive to maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and encourages dialogue.
I teach simplified problems in physics with real life examples. I want students to work in groups after a lecture to discuss a given problem to solve. I try to adhere to the goals I have spelled out in the course syllabus, but I know to be flexible and to adapt my teaching whenever necessary. I am friendly, not intimidating yet with appropriate boundaries. A conducive learning atmosphere has to be one of mutual respect.
Teaching is a learning experience. I learn to be flexible in my methodology and approach, to deal with unusual students and learning strategies, and to communicate better every time I teach. I learn that every student has a story. I learn to turn my devotion and dedication into a fun activity for the students.
