About Kathy

I worked as a journalist and sub-editor for 15 years before training as a teacher of ESL and IELTS preparation. After teaching classroom-based ESL I began tutoring one-on-one, online and face-to-face, from my home in Sydney, Australia.

I hold a certificate from Cambridge English in How to Teach IELTS, and a Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Macquarie University, Australia.

My students* openly appreciate my knowledge, expertise, committed professionalism and personal warmth. In turn, I consider it a privilege to teach them. I learn a lot from my students' excellent questions about tricky English grammar and vocabulary.

I am also intrigued and humbled by the stories and life experiences my students share with me. We often find we have interests or hobbies (even dislikes or fears) in common. There's always something to talk about!

Many of my students have gone on to higher education, secured sought-after visas and job promotions, set up businesses, and joined online communities where English is the common language.

When I'm not teaching, out hiking, seeing a movie with friends or cooking for the family, you'll find me in my garden, curled up with my dog and a good book.

About the lesson

As an IELTS candidate, you deserve skilful guidance from a tutor with a clear plan to help you prepare for this important test. Your dreams of work, migration or study may well depend on it.
My job as a tutor is to lift your language proficiency and sharpen your exam skills in ways that match the IELTS criteria for success. Specifically, this means developing or enhancing your ability to:

*strictly follow instructions and meet task requirements
*understand question prompts and handle different question types
*identify keywords
*identify and use synonyms, antonyms and paraphrase
*recognise 'distractors'
*interpret charts
*plan efficiently
*write reports/letters/essays suitable in type, tone and structure
*use a range of task-appropriate vocabulary, with precision
*demonstrate control of, and flexibility with, grammar
*use cohesion devices judiciously
*deliver 'natural' speech
*pronounce words for ease of understanding
*proofread for spelling and punctuation
*do untimed, then slow-practice test tasks, before moving to time-managed practice
*engage with topics common in IELTS tests.

I design my IELTS lessons to meet YOUR particular learning needs, goals and style. Included in those lessons are quality materials carefully selected for relevance and efficacy. I use target-corpus texts, images, graphs, audio and video clips, plus IELTS-appropriate vocabulary puzzles and grammar games.
My role as tutor is to be your guide, to support you to 'discover' meanings, patterns -- and thus answers -- for yourself. Not only is it more fun to learn this way, it also helps with recall. And I encourage you not to worry about mistakes: They are an opportunity to learn something you may need on 'the big day'.
At the trial lesson, we'll have a friendly chat about the IELTS test you are taking and your current band scores (if you have any). Lessons cancelled and/or rescheduled less than 12 hours prior to scheduled time incur a penalty of 50% of the advertised lesson fee.
'No-shows' pay 100% of the advertised lesson fee -- no refunds.
