About Susan

With 26 years of experience in primary education, I specialize in building strong foundations in math for students in kindergarten - 3rd grade. As a licensed State of Kansas teacher, I use research-based, structured methods tailored to each child's unique needs. My lessons are warm and multisensory- helping students see, hear, say and do as they learn. I love using manipulatives to help students understand abstract concepts! I'm known for being organized, patient, nurturing, and highly encouraging. I quickly pinpoint where a child is struggling and turn those areas into strengths using step-by-step instruction, clear modeling, and positive praise. I encourage Growth Mindset thinking in my students. The best way to learn is from our mistakes. Whether your child needs intervention, extra practice, or enrichment, I provide high-quality, professional tutoring that meets them where they are and moves them forward with confidence. My goal is simple: to help your child feel successful, capable, and proud of themselves every step of the way. Athletes work with coaches to improve their performance. Why shouldn't students work with a coach to strengthen their academic skills?

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor is rooted in meeting each student exactly where they are and helping them move forward with confidence by filling in any skill gaps along the way. I believe every child can succeed when instruction is explicit, systematic, and encouraging.

Teaching Method & Techniques:

I use research-based structured math practices. Lessons are multisensory, meaning students see, hear, say, and write as they learn — which helps knowledge “stick.” I utilize manipulatives to help students understand abstract concepts. I break concepts into small, manageable steps and model each one before gradually releasing responsibility to the student. Frequent check-ins, immediate feedback, and positive reinforcement keep lessons engaging and productive.

Each session follows a predictable routine to build security and momentum:

Quick Review: Reinforce previously taught math concepts.

Explicit Instruction: Introduce/teach a new math skill or strategy.

Guided Practice: Work alongside the student for support and error correction.

Independent Practice: Student applies the skill on their own.

Wrap-Up: Celebrate successes and preview what’s next.

With 26 years of experience in primary education, I specialize in foundational math skills and number sense for young learners- kindergarten - 3rd grade. I hold a current State of Kansas teaching license.
