2017 CV Letter, Opening Remarks

The 2016-2017 school year was rather different for me. This was my first full-time position at a private parochial school and I did not feel as adjusted as I am to teaching at the college level. I spent from 2006 to 2015 teaching college, I needed to learn to adjust to parochial school expectations. Having never forgotten my teaching methodologies, I continued to apply them to my high school students in an effort to challenge them and better prepare them for college.
In regards to my previously taught courses, I continued to refine them and support my original philosophies and pedagogies that I believed worked so well. To this day, I find myself resisting the urge to add too many more reading assignments (I don’t wish to pack the course with so much work that it is unbearable). However, I leave these supplemental readings (essays related to course material) up to the student to read if they request them. A couple of semesters ago, I did a major overhaul to my 2362 curriculum. I changed out several works for others. I found this to be a very satisfying move, and will continue to “tweak” the syllabus by adding new works to my pedagogical canon.
Since 2014, I devoted significant time for the publication for my work, something I have long ignored, oddly. I was grateful to have received publication (or acceptance) for eleven different works of poetry, plays, film scripts, flash fiction, and other bits of writing. This success has inspired me to set aside more time for publication purposes. Some other pieces have been accepted for publication and were released in 2015 or have yet to be released. As of June 2017, I’m close to 40 publications under my belt and a few that have been accepted but not yet released.
One of my more recent successes is that my monologue “Unending Repetition” has been accepted for performance Off-Off Broadway in Queens, NY by Equity Library Theatre. MY wife palyed the role while I understudied. We performed in August of this year and won Best Drama.
This success is inspired by a previous NYC production that has strongly motivated me in continuing to perform and submit to NYC theatres. In summer 2014, I had a one-act play (called “Libertad”) open Off-Broadway in New York City and a month later, another play (called “GPS: Gender’s Problematic Situation”) was produced in Los Angeles, CA. “GPS” went on to win “Best Comedy” in the Playwright’s Express play competition. In the meantime, I have submitted several works for production and publication to various presses and theatre companies. On April 1, 2015, the production company Cupcake Lady Productions in New York City staged a night of comedies revolving around an April Fool’s theme; my silly play “The Problem with Robot Dogs” was staged as part of the production (Off-Broadway at The Producer’s Theatre).
I start every day of (college) class with an assignment I call a daily. These are usually random topics or phrases unrelated to course work to give the students opportunities to stretch their creative writing muscle. I give the students about 12 minutes to work on these while I hand back graded assignments. The dailies work in many different ways. For starters, it gets students thinking about a random topic right off the bat, cultivating quick thinking. Secondly, the dailies occasionally relate to an on-campus or national issue. For example, one of my dailies was “What do you think about the new dorms being built on campus?” Thus, I received mixed reactions which led to wonderful discussions in which the students had to defend their opinions. Thirdly, I use these dailies as an attendance for the class; too often, students will sign their friends in (when aforementioned friend is not in attendance). By utilizing the dailies as an attendance-checker, I can keep a more accurate eye on students.
In all of my courses (especially 1301 and 1302) arguing is the key component to my class. I feel that if a student cannot verbalize his or her opinion in an argumentative form, they cannot truly argue a point in an essay. At first, students are very cautious about voicing their opinion, in an effort to not step on one’s toes. However, after the in-class arguments and the debate game that we play, students are more confident and more partial to making better arguments. This is especially evident in their papers. Throughout the semester, I constantly harp on the importance of putting their passion to the page.
After the dailies, I start off with a mini-lesson that covers any problems that a lot of students are having in class. I try to focus on items that students are having trouble with. After about 2 weeks, the mini-lessons are phased out because the only problems remaining specific to the students. In recent semesters, since a lot of students take both of my 13xx courses, they learn what I look for. So when they are in 1302, for example, our mini-lessons are phased out by the first week or so because of what they have retained from 1301.
I feel that I have an effective approach to teaching primarily because of my disposition. Every day in class I hold myself in a happy demeanor; after all, if I am not happy to be there, why should my students be? I like to joke with my students in an effort to ease the information in; i.e., the class does not become an unbearable bore. I also like to experiment in different teaching pedagogies and styles; the students are especially receptive when we have class outside. They enjoy the break in the monotony that college can sometimes harbor. In addition to keeping things upbeat, I try to relate the material to real-life. I am striving to remind students of the practical use of English courses and let the students know that even though they may not be English majors, they can benefit from taking their English classes seriously.

Upcoming Projects

Although I did not get the opportunity to attend any conference, I have been slowly working on a few projects that I would like to get into a conference soon.

Conference Material

• “Publication Workshop” – This idea is about starting a one-shot seminar with several of the published faculty where they can have a round table discussion with several of the majors and grad students about publishing. Through their experiences, they can enlighten students about how to get published, what tools you need, what to expect and things of this nature. In the meantime, a small group of English undergrad and grad students and I have been pushing our own publication interests.

Non-conference Material

• “Miss Fortune” – Although I am not a fan of musicals, I am currently working with a Kingsville musician on a musical. I figure that writing one would help me appreciate the medium more as I have a stronger appreciation for theatre.

Recently Completed Material
• Submission of plays, several of which received publication.
• “Premature Punchline” – comedy troupe that started in June 2011 and continued with performances every month (about 1-2 shows per month). Next show is second week of February.
• “Textual Overture” – a reading series of work-in-development; mainly short plays, poems, and musical acts performed at local coffee shops. Next production will be first week of February.

Please inquire for more details.
