About Sorren

For being 30 years old, I have a long career in archaeology and heritage! Currently a freelance archaeologist working on a variety of sites in South England. Previously working in commercial archaeology and heritage consultancy at Jacobs engineering, evaluating and protecting heritage and archaeological sites. I adore tutoring in this subject, as I believe that an awareness of our human past is an important part of our identity. I have been tutoring on an ad hoc basis for four years, largely early degree level, but also coaching successful Oxbridge applications in this field. Prior to this, I studied archaeology at the prestigious Institute of Archaeology at UCL, gaining a 2:1 BSc in the subject. My degree involved a large amount of fieldwork, and an original research dissertation. I gained 2:1 and 1st level assessments throughout my chosen modules, largely covering ancient technologies and fieldwork techniques. In addition, I taught ancient copper smelting and casting techniques at the UCL experimental archaeology course for 5 years each September, eventually specialising in ancient techniques and materials through experimental archaeology. During my teens and into my early 20s, I volunteered, and then worked, with the Société Jersiaise in Jersey, Channel Islands. In this role, myself and the principal field archaeologist advanced research into the islands past, working on research excavation, conservation, analysis, and archiving, while interacting with research projects such as Ice Age Island, and the amazing iron age coin hoard found in 2012. I was one of the last cohorts to be able to choose the Archaeology A level, which also included significant original study, and gave me an excellent grounding in the subject. Given that this option is unfortunately no longer available, I want to open up the study of this wonderful subject to anyone who has an interest in the human past.

My teaching method is to focus on the students' learning rather than what I have planned. My approach would be to provide a broad overview of the topic to assess, together, particular levels of interest, and how the student learns most effectively. I want to work WITH you, not talk AT you, aiming to use teaching and learning theories such as Vygotsky's scaffolding, to ensure an enriching experience. My sessions are generally one hour, but depend ultimately on the needs of the individual student. What I will teach will depend on the level of knowledge of the student. Addressing a relative beginner, I will begin by working through the key, basic archaeological principles, feeding in case study examples from various sites and time periods. This will then become a process of developing these ideas and sites into more complex aspects of archaeological theory, practice, and research. I am passionate about the democratisation of knowledge - as such, if there are affordability issues for anyone wanting to sign up with me as a tutor, please do let me know, and I will be more than happy to make adjustments to individual prices.
