About Matt Dark Sky

Hello I'm Matt, a full time music producer with 17 years worth of industry experience, my releases have been played on national radio multiple times and topped over 25million streams across various DSP’s. I am also a professional mix engineer, live performer and DJ. Examples of my work can be found online by searching 'Dark Sky' or 'Benyayer'.

My discography includes two studio albums on Modeselektor's Monkeytown Records and multiple EP's on labels such as Ninja Tune, 50 Weapons, Last Night On Earth, Tectonic and Mister Saturday Night. I've also officially remixed artists such as Kelis, The XX, Bombay Bicycle Club, Glass Animals and collaborated with the likes of Breach, Afriquoi, D-Bridge to name but a few.

I have many years experience DJ'ing and performing live and have toured the world multiple times playing locations such as Berghain, Panorama Bar, Fabric, Glastonbury, Melt, Dimensions, Mutek, Sonar, Corsica Studios, Phonox, Village Underground and many more.

I'm also highly experienced in scoring for film, TV, library and theatre productions. Some of my previous clients include O2, Go Pro, Pioneer, Oculus Rift, Nokia, Lucozade, The Louvre, Burberry, Amnesty International plus many more.

I hold a distinction in Fine Art 4D from Central St Martins. This degree was focused on installation and time based media with many skills transferrable to sound design and creative music production.

I am very proficient in Ableton Live and have excellent knowledge of synthesisers and all manner of synthesis techniques as well as audio recording and processing techniques.

Online lessons will be held using the free 'Muse Sessions' desktop app. This will allow us to hear, see and control each others music software.

My approach will be tailored to what your needs are. Whether that’s help finishing tracks, starting new ideas working on mixdowns, arrangement, synthesis, sound design, performing live, recording techniques, DJing, Industry tips and so much more.

I like to use students' tracks as a starting point to explore and refine techniques but we can also use released tracks that inspire you and and reverse engineer them to explore the techniques behind how they were made.

I'm also happy to show students projects that I've made and released under my Dark Sky / Benyayer aliases to provide insights and share my tips and tricks I've acquired over the years.

For students interested in sound design, we'll learn about how synthesisers and samplers work, how to make creative use of effects and signal routing as well as some tips and tricks for getting the most out of whatever software or hardware you use.

I'm also able to offer industry advice on how to get signed to labels, building a personal brand, content creation and tips on self releasing and composing music for film and TV.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

Hearing Chameleon by Herbie Hancock from my mum's tape collection made me want to learn sax but I actually fell in love with my sax teacher's drum kit.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Probably 90s R&B or Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient works.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Asking a student to make a whole song using just one sound. This can be demanding but also very creatively rewarding.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Probably the bagpipes as it's very easy to sound bad very quickly on them.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

    Determination, patience, creativity
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Pharell - his work under The Neptunes inspired me a lot but I also feel like he'd have some great wisdom to share.

Prince - he was so talented but also so versatile plus I feel like he'd be super fun to hang out with.

Rick Rubin - more of an ideas man than a musician but having ideas in the studio and embracing different approaches can be invaluable when you're hitting walls.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Stay curious and embrace your signatures.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Listening to the students' WIPs before the lesson, writing up feedback notes for them afterwards and allowing them to screen record the session.
