About Matyas

I'm Matyas Hofecker a professional double bass and bass guitar player and dedicated music educator based in London. My musical journey began at the age of four on the trumpet, but it was during my early school years that I discovered my passion for jazz and the bass guitar. In my teens, I transitioned to the double bass—an instrument that would ultimately define my career and creative voice.

I studied at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and later earned my Master’s Degree with honours from the Music and Arts University of Vienna. My performance career has taken me across Europe and the UK, with appearances at major venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, 606 Club, PizzaExpress Jazz Club, and festivals including North Sea Jazz Festival and Marseille Jazz Festival.

Career Highlights:

- 2024 Parliamentary Jazz Award Nominee

- Winner of the International Jazz Contest Zilina (2015)

- Touring Artist with renowned jazz legends including Stacey Kent and Harold Mabern

- Mentor to successful students, including full scholarship recipients at the Royal Academy of Music

Teaching Experience:
I’ve been teaching privately since 2010, working with students from ages 6 to 80—from absolute beginners to advanced players. My teaching background includes:

- One-on-one lessons, group classes, and workshops

- Subjects ranging from music theory, ear training, and jazz history, to ensemble performance

- Faculty positions at World Heart Beat Music Academy, Wandsworth Music Academy, and Hinchley Wood School

In 2018, I was honoured to be an invited instructor at the Carinthian Jazz Workshop and the International Saxophone Competition, where I led classes in jazz education and performance.

My broad experience as both a performer and educator allows me to offer students a well-rounded and inspiring learning environment, grounded in real-world musicianship.

My teaching is centred around one simple idea: every student is unique, and their musical path should be too. Whether you're a complete beginner, preparing for a music university audition, or playing casually for personal enjoyment, I’ll help you reach your goals through carefully tailored lessons that reflect your interests, strengths, and ambitions.

With a special focus on Jazz, I also teach Classical, Rock, Pop, Latin, and Funk styles, offering a wide musical palette to explore. I specialise in Double Bass, Bass Guitar, and Music Theory, and my method integrates both creative and technical development to ensure you're not only playing music, but understanding it deeply.

My Methodology:
Each lesson is built around a balance of theory and practice, customised to suit your pace and style. We cover:

Music Theory (in a clear, practical way)

Scales, Chords & Harmony

Rhythm & Groove

Technique Development

Improvisation & Ear Training

Practice Strategies That Actually Work

Rather than sticking rigidly to one method or syllabus, I adapt every session based on how you learn best. Whether you prefer structured exercises or learn better by diving into songs and improvisation, we’ll find what works for you.

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like:
- Check-in & Goals: We start by reviewing progress and setting targets

- Core Focus: Technique, theory, or repertoire work based on your needs

- Creative Application: Improvisation, composing, or playing songs

- Wrap-Up: Practice strategies and next steps tailored to your time and routine

Why Students Succeed With Me:
- Lessons are flexible, motivating, and student-led

- I support learners of all ages and backgrounds

- I break down complex ideas into easy, digestible steps

You'll develop both musicianship and confidence

I’m genuinely passionate about helping students thrive, no matter where they're starting from. Whether you're aiming for grade exams, preparing for auditions, or just want to jam with friends, I’ll support you every step of the way with knowledge, care, and a love for music.
