About Devin
I fell in love with academia during my undergraduate, but that this would happen was far from obvious to me. I went from an undergraduate student who had no sense of why he was at university or why what he was studying mattered to an awardee of my department's only Honours First Class degree of my graduating year. What catalyzed this change? Professors who showed me how to learn.
I am now an assistant professor in the philosophy of technology, with numerous academic publications including a monograph.
I hold a BA (Hons) from McGill University in English, Cultural Studies, and Film Studies. I hold an MA degree in Media and Communications from the European Graduate School in Switzerland, where I worked with leading contemporary philosophers as well as cinema and media studies scholars. I hold a PhD from Harvard University in Film and Visual Studies, which was awarded in 2022.

My lessons are entirely tailored to student needs. Are you a university student struggling with a particular class or text? Are you a postgraduate considering further studies in an MA or PhD program and need help creating a successful portfolio for admissions? Are you currently in classes with hundreds of your peers and feel that you would learn more effectively studying one-on-one with a working professor?
In all of these cases, I can help. After a consultation session that addresses desired outcomes of our work together, we will agree to an individualized plan of study.
I have won numerous awards for teaching in all of the institutions I have worked with. What students say often sets me apart is my ability to discuss complex concepts and methods in as many different ways as are necessary for individual comprehension. I believe I don't need to "dumb things down" for struggling students; instead, I need to find a common language in which they understand those ideas or forms of research they are struggling with. I also believe it is important to show the pertinence of what is being studied--we should always be able to answer the question of why we are reading and talking about a given idea, text, or theory.
My lessons are based on Socratic pedagogy: in other words, we talk to each other! I ensure student comprehension by engaging in dialogues about the session topic. This allows me to actively monitor what a student understands and what a student still struggles with, and I continuously adjust my teaching on that basis.
