About Beth

I've been teaching for 27 years--first as a teaching assistant in graduate school, and for 21 years as a college professor at DePauw University, a top-tier liberal arts college. I have always loved teaching, and was grateful to win every teaching award there was to win at the University of Illinois, where I did my work in comparative literature. Over the years, I have taught thousands of students, and remain close to a number of them. My teaching philosophy has always hinged on the belief that learning should always feel exciting, that there is urgency and meaning and implications in the material we are encountering. It should never feel like a stale academic enterprise. This extends to the ways that I ask my students to engage with the material and to communicate what it is they find most meaningful. I deeply believe that the only way that true learning happens is when people feel respected, challenged and part of a community that values them and their lived experiences. My approach to teaching is that we are fellow travelers--I may have been on the path longer by a sheer accident of time, and I am delighted to share what I've discovered with you on that path, but your experiences and interpretations and perspectives are equally valuable, and I want to know what you're thinking and to help you package your ideas in ways that are going to be compelling to other people. It's no surprise that power is a key element in any classroom. Because I believe that intrinsic motivation is ultimately a more meaningful driver than extrinsic rewards, and that the traditional power dynamic with the professor determining grades compromises the kind of risk-taking that leads to real learning, I have developed a classroom culture of shared power, with a guided self-assessment approach that emphasizes qualitative feedback and reflection on performance more than grades. Though there are ultimately grades given in this approach, they are the combined result of students' and my perception of performance and mastery of material. Former students have assured me that this approach set them up far better for their working life, in that it privileges a strong work ethic and producing quality deliverables.

My students will tell you that I LOVE my subject matter--anything dark and existential that gets us questioning what we think we know--and that I particularly love discovering what my students love (or hate--a strong reaction is key!) about the literature we're reading and the ideas we're wrestling with. To me, it's all about wrestling with texts, digging deep and trying to puzzle through what they mean and how they help us navigate our world (or serve as cautionary tales in terms of how NOT to navigate!). In my classes, we're all in it together, and I never claim that my interpretation trumps anyone else's. As long as you're taking the texts we're working with seriously and reading closely, anything and everything is fair game. My syllabi include a line that informs everything that goes on in my classes--from discussion to independent projects and class activities: "none of this means anything unless it means something to you and we can make it mean something to someone else." Literature, philosophy, religious studies in a vacuum... is not the way I roll! I want you to come away seeing the direct connections between the stuff we read and your lives. In that capacity, I work with every student to help them to craft projects that start from their own driving questions about the material and help them to pursue areas of interest and possible career paths. It should all be relevant, it should all feel productive and meaningful. If it doesn't we're doing it wrong!!
