About Mary Ann (Annie)
I have a B.A. in English from Beloit College and a Master's of Fine Arts from Columbia University, have published in Redbook and written freelance arts reviews. I have edited doctoral theses and papers for academic journals. I excel at coaching on essay preparation for college application essays, and also on standardized test preparation for the English components. I now live in the Orlando area. One of my most recent successes was with a student I came to know locally. He was a young Palestinian/American man I met on the Maxwell Frost Congressional campaign. The first thing he ever said to me was, "How much did it cost when you went to college?" so I knew he was very stressed about money. I volunteered to help him on his college essays. He asked, "What would that look like?" I explained that we could meet over Zoom to review what he had already written, and shape the essays from there. When something was unclear to me, we would discuss it, and when I thought he'd gotten it right, I would say, "Then say THAT." He had real stories to tell, about his sense of being an outsider in the US because of his name that was hard for Americans to pronounce, and about being an outsider within the Palestinian community because he identifies as LGBTQ+. We worked when he could fit it in over a couple of months. He was, and is, a terrific student. He had already qualified for the Florida Bright Futures program for in-state students so that he could go to any Florida state colleges and universities for no tuition, but wanted to see what kind of financial aid offers he could drum up from schools out-of-state. After the first essay or two, I arm-twisted him into applying to Princeton, because I knew that all financial aid they award was in the form of grants. When we were working on another essay, I thought, his experience and point of view were so distinct, Harvard would really go for this guy, so I suggested he apply, which he was happy to do. He got into both Princeton and Harvard, and is going to Harvard in the fall, with the most generous scholarship level that Harvard awards.

I tailor my lessons to the needs of each pupil. My forte is coaching students in essay writing, particularly college application essays. I help them develop and edit essays that will stand out (in a positive way) from the deluge of applications colleges receive. I used to read unsolicited fiction for a major magazine, and know firsthand what it takes to attract readers' attention and tempt them to go beyond the first few lines. For SAT preparation or AP exams, for instance, I will have the student do a sample test to diagnose what issues they need to address. Some students will require help to understand what constitutes a cogent essay that will meet the standards of the test, and to complete it within time constraints. Others might have one or several areas that challenge them, like noun/verb agreement, or an understanding of passive and active voice. I work to discern where the individual's strengths and weaknesses lie.
