About Sam

Hello, I am a graduate of Leeds Conservatoire with a 1st class Honours in BA Jazz Guitar. I achieved the highest mark in the 2016 cohort, and was subsequently awarded the conservatoire scholarship. I work in London as a private guitar tutor, producer, performer and host of a weekly Jazz Jam night. I enjoy teaching people of all age groups and abilities, and have worked as a Music Therapist for various organisations. I am a big Jazz and Blues fan, but my interests span many genres and I love teaching all forms of improvisation. My favourite musicians of all time are Neil Young, John McLaughlin and Terry Riley. In my spare time I like to get involved with various activist projects, read and travel, among other things!

First lesson is free! You are welcome here or I can drive to you, alternatively I also teach online. I really value the mutual exchange of information within one to one lessons - everybody has something to offer no matter what level you're at. Together we can fine-tune your natural abilities, and if you like, we can get stuck into music theory. Do not be intimidated by this, knowing the theory behind what you are playing can be very rewarding, but you may just want to play 'by ear'… THIS IS FINE! Whatever it is, we will relate everything back to your strengths and interests! The most important thing with any instrument is SIMPLICITY. This is ultimately the most rewarding and enjoyable aspect of music and the older I get the more I subscribe to this. It is very important to be consistent and diligent with practice. 20 minutes of focused practice each day is much much better than cramming in 2 hours of 'noodling' once or twice a week. The guitar is a very visual instrument and we need to use muscle memory to build up a good knowledge of shapes and alternative fingerings. The next step is crucial and that's putting these concepts into practice. Once they have been learnt we can then allow ourselves time to play more freely, so that these ideas are properly internalised. It's not all about practising - we also need to allow ourselves time to just 'play'! It should be fun, and a voyage of discovery :)

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

When my Dad bought me a guitar at the age of 8 years old. I played for many years and had a reawakening when my guitar teacher in college introduced me to Gypsy Jazz.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Im a big Jazz fan. I love Bebop and the Avant - Garde, and most of my playing is within this genre, but interestingly, despite this my favourite musician of all time is Neil Young, and since his music is no longer on Spotify I frequently listen to him on my record player.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

In playing without judgement, and learning to accept what comes out, being happy 'where you're at', meaning to not reach beyond your means but to stay right where you are, and master the basics. This is ultimately the fastest way to progress and the most fun!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Guitar of course! Because there are so many ways to play the same thing, or even the same note (try it!). Keyboard players have it easy….
  • What are your keys to success?

    Consistency, diligence, and non judgment.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Sun Ra, so I can ask where he comes from (allegedly he's an ancient deity). John Coltrane (because its John Coltrane, the figurehead of experimental, spiritual Jazz in the 60's and he somehow overcame a chronic drug addiction - I imagine it would be a stimulating conversation). Jeff Beck, the guitar heroes guitar hero, he was meant to be a lovely guy, very down to earth with a passion for cars (I don't know anything about cars so I would like to learn)
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I once met Roger Daltrey of the Who - he said don't bother getting into the music industry.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I dont dress things up, and my students find my attitude refreshing and honest. Music education can be intimidating for many people and its my job to make it accessible. I am also very understanding and friendly!
