About Judy
For one school year, I had been an EducationCorps tutor of University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for AVID classes in Mission Bay High School. The AVID classes each include about 25 students who were struggling academically. I have encountered numerous students who did not really want to get tutored or lacked enough motivation to learn. As I got to know some students on a more personal level, I’ve come to realize they have issues like financial difficulties and more time spent on caring for family. As I helped them and saw their improvements, I got more motivated to share the fun of learning. I wish I can give out as much help as possible to encourage people to learn.
I was also an Instructional Apprentice for a biology class at UCSD. I gave discussion sessions and office hours weekly for 28 college students. I had gained valuable experience designing problem solving sessions and tests review sessions in limited time. During office hours, I also had opportunities to answer questions from students.

I have realized that one time I tutored a high school student was one of the most memorable and meaningful experiences I had. The opportunities to tutor others were the past experiences that I missed the most. As for my methodology for tutoring, I think it’s very important to give the help they really need, to try to make sure the student understand the steps of the broblems or concepts thoroughly and to make the tutoring process enjoyable and comfortable. To do that, as a tutor I should let the student know to not be shy to ask any questions or raise any concern in the beginning, say, let them know they can just raise their hand or call my name any time. Sometimes, maybe the sound isn't loud enough that they can’t hear me, or maybe the students only has trouble with certain part of the question, so it’s important to make them feel comfortable in the beginning, using friendly and patient attitude. I can also pause to ask student questions to have more comfortable interactions with the student, to pause to ask the students if they have any questions, to compliment and encourage student, to introduce some jokes or relevant fun facts. It’s important to do those because some students might get tired, bored, or maybe they’re embarrassed or shy to ask questions , or there might be something I understand but didn’t realize they don't understand, or they lack interest because they don’t know how the problems relate to the real world. It’s important to make a comfortable and fun atmosphere, to let them get the help they really need, and to make sure they understand.
