About Andrea

Since elementary school, literature has been my favorite school subject. I read during my free time and I am aware of these stories (what follows is a greatly condensed list of my favorite literature) -The House on Mango Street -To Kill a Mockingbird -Fahrenheit 451 -Hamlet -The Crucible -Lord of the Flies -Night -Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry In addition, I have tutored first graders in reading and I have taken a Multicultural children's literature course.

About the lesson

For children: My teaching method is based around the pace of the student. I will let the student read out loud individually or read out loud with them. If a text is difficult I will ask the student to break down the text and not rush them. I will also ask open-ended questions such as "what did you think of the story/characters?" For adolescents and older: I would lead a discussion on a written piece. The student will be given the chance to share their opinions or beliefs. However, they will be asked how they came to their conclusions. It is not to put them on the spot, but to practice using text examples as support for their ideas (great practice for essay writing). Questions and commentaries in the discussion will involve symbolism/themes and the overall plot of the written piece.
