About Michael
Hello! I am a graduate of MIT with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, with a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I have several decades of work experience in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities, including R&D in the chemicals industry, Information Technology support, and government contract work. I also did a short two-year stint as a math and science teacher. I am especially grateful to have been a private tutor and mentor in math and science for over 25 years. I want to help encourage people to become lifelong learners, and particularly to help people get over any fear or anxiety related to science and math. These subjects are critical aspects of the technological advances driving the world, and the more comfortable members of society are with them, the better off we will be in managing the changes.

The key to effective learning is building trust between the learner and the teacher. Learners often feel self-conscious about "not knowing," and it is important that the teacher alleviates such concerns. My style of teaching relies upon building a rapport with the learner such that they feel comfortable confronting what they don't know, asking questions to get their confusions cleared up or knowledge gaps filled, using the language of math and science correctly to provide a strong base of understanding, and doing copious practice with the subject to develop skills in analysis, critical thinking, problem solving, error checking, and recognizing patterns. If I were to poll the hundreds of students that I have worked with over the years, I believe they would say the quality which makes me most effective is patience. As long as I can see that someone is truly trying to get it, putting in their best effort, they can do no wrong, and we will have fun on the journey!
I teach in all levels of math from Algebra to Calculus III and Differential Equations. I also teach in chemistry (regular and organic), as well as physics. Additionally, I offer help in standardized test preparation for the mathematics portion of such assessments. I generally teach learners from middle-school age through college and adults returning to school for continuing education.
A typical learner interaction with me starts with you, the learner, providing an explanation of the issue you would like to cover. I prefer my sessions to be primarily driven by the learner, as I see myself as more of a guide on the learner's exploration rather than leading them to a place of my choosing. We'll have a conversation to gauge what you currently understand. We start from where you are.
As we go along, we will possibly uncover knowledge gaps which need to be addressed, and we will take the time to do so, giving you the ability to ask questions and practice the skills. I believe it is important for teachers to model the skills for learners, so I teach by example. I also believe it is important to use the language of math and science, and use it properly, to best understand these subjects. Thus, you can expect to hear the vocabulary from me and to use the vocabulary yourself in our discussions. I also believe it is important for people to learn from their mistakes, thus not be afraid of making them. Finding one's own errors is a vital skill, and you can expect to do this when working with me.
The issue of calculator use often arises. Calculators are a very useful tool, and they have their place. I typically discourage people from using calculators for simple arithmetic, though, as I think it hinders gaining an intuition about math. I may ask that you demonstrate that you can do certain calculations without a calculator. I want you to feel that if it were necessary, you would be able to carry out a computation by hand or even in your head if you didn't have access to a calculator.
I hope you find this approach would work for you!
