About Kayla

I believe that teaching Spanish is an opportunity to open minds and connect cultures through language. My teaching philosophy is centered on creating engaging, meaningful lessons that develop students’ communicative competence and cultural awareness. I prioritize a balanced approach, combining practical language use with a solid understanding of grammar and vocabulary. I encourage students to practice speaking and listening through role-plays, interviews, and discussions on topics relevant to their lives and interests, while integrating reading and writing tasks that reinforce vocabulary and syntax. Grammar is always taught in context, with explanations linked to authentic usage rather than isolated drills. Culture is an integral part of every lesson, with explorations of customs, traditions, music, literature, and history from across the Spanish-speaking world, helping students appreciate the language’s rich diversity. I tailor lessons to each student’s unique goals and learning style, using multimedia resources and technology to make learning interactive and accessible. One of my most rewarding teaching moments was helping a student who had struggled with speaking anxiety become a confident conversationalist through patient guidance and targeted practice. I strive to create a supportive, positive classroom environment where students feel encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and celebrate their progress on the path to fluency and cultural understanding.

As a Spanish educator, I believe in making language meaningful, memorable, and manageable. That means designing experiences where students connect personally with what they’re learning and see real-world value in using Spanish. I teach through context, not isolation. If students are learning the past tense, we don’t just conjugate—we write biographies, tell stories, or describe a memorable day.

If we’re exploring commands, we might design a wellness campaign or write advice columns. I use Spanish as the primary language of instruction, paired with visuals, props, and plenty of modeling to support understanding. I focus heavily on input—reading, listening, and watching real content—before expecting fluent output.

Songs, podcasts, news clips, and short films from across the Spanish-speaking world provide not just vocabulary, but cultural context and emotional connection. Students learn that there is no single “correct” Spanish, but a whole world of accents, phrases, and perspectives. One of my most successful projects had students write and perform short telenovela scenes—it was hilarious, creative, and built confidence like nothing else.

I also integrate student interests into my planning, whether that means including sports commentary, cooking shows, or social justice topics. I use digital tools strategically to give students more chances to practice, reflect, and review at their own pace. Above all, I want learners to walk away not just with language skills, but with a greater appreciation for the richness of Spanish-speaking cultures and their place in our interconnected world.
