About Alec
I’ve been teaching chess for over 6 years and have worked with students aged 8 to 60, both casually and competitively. My training stems from international curriculum models and extensive self-study, including correspondence with certified chess masters and participation in open tournaments. I offer structured lesson plans designed to improve thinking speed, foresight, and decision-making. Teaching chess is more than explaining tactics—it’s about guiding students to trust their instincts and stay focused under pressure. I pride myself on creating a learning atmosphere that is engaging, encouraging, and intellectually challenging. Through personalised feedback and detailed game analysis, my students consistently show growth and enthusiasm for the game. Chess isn’t just a hobby for me—it’s a life skill that trains the brain in unique ways. Over the years, I’ve seen shy students become more confident and analytical, and I’ve helped competitive players refine their approach. My coaching style is flexible, goal-oriented, and grounded in building habits that lead to long-term success.

Chess lessons in Manchester are designed to help players at all levels—from curious beginners to advanced tacticians—understand the core mechanics and psychology behind the game. We begin with board orientation, piece movement, and the fundamental rules, quickly moving to strategic themes like controlling the centre, developing pieces, and king safety. Visual diagrams, real board examples, and guided exercises make each concept tangible and clear. As you progress, lessons shift into tactical calculations, pattern recognition, and strategic decision-making. You’ll learn about forks, pins, skewers, and mating nets. You’ll also analyse famous games to identify winning methods and common mistakes. Middle-game planning and endgame techniques form a major component of this stage, ensuring you learn not only how to start a game but how to finish it effectively. For advanced students, we explore time control strategies, tournament preparation, and analysis tools such as chess engines. Each session is interactive, with plenty of real-play scenarios and annotated reviews. Chess helps build mental discipline, boosts concentration, and nurtures the patience to win not just games—but life challenges.
