About Anna
I am a postgraduate MA student studying Literary Translation at UEA. I graduated with a BA joint honours in German studies and History from the University of Birmingham in 2019. I have a passion for history, and my idea of a perfect day out is gallivanting round an old stately home or going to a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village. I always have my nose in an old book, and believe in the importance of making education and learning interesting and accessible for everyone. As a BA graduate in history, I am fully capable of teaching up to A-Levels.
During my second year at university, I was a qualified mentor with the West Midlands Aimhigher mentoring scheme. I worked with a small group of secondary school students at King's Norton Boy's School once a week between November 2016 and May 2017, delivering mentoring sessions about higher education, budgeting, CV writing, interview skills, applying for jobs, understanding student loans and other areas which I would consider life skills but may not be taught in school. I enjoyed a huge level of freedom in this role, delivering highly personalised sessions of my own choosing whilst also proving a highly responsible representative of my university.
During my two years spent abroad in Germany, I worked as a Foreign Language Assistant, which meant that I taught English to German secondary school pupils for two whole academic years, working alongside the teaching staff. I have gained invaluable teaching skills during this time as well as vastly improving my understanding of German and linguistics. It was also a unique cultural experience being a native English speaker living and teaching in Germany, and I was responsible for conveying and discussing our similarities and differences.
I have had continuous part-time jobs alongside my studies for years now, so my time-management and interpersonal skills have developed alongside my academic skills. I am looking to get back into tutoring after my second year abroad as I believe it is much more rewarding to help people progress in German or History, which are my real passions in life, than working anywhere else.
I now have around two year's experience of providing private tutoring, and have taught students of all ages and abilities. I do not have a preference because I enjoy a variety and I believe education should be open to all.

I am extremely organised and motivated to help others succeed with GCSEs, A Levels or adult or casual learners. I will bring a planned session with me every week and find out as much about you, your goals and your learning style as I can to help me tailor my approach so you can get the best results.
Over the course of A Levels and University, or out of my own personal interest, I have studied these areas in more detail and therefore feel more confident teaching in these areas:
-20th Century Russia (particularly the rise and fall of communism)
-Nazi Germany (as my degree is also German, this is my absolute speciality)
-Medieval everyday life and the Black Death
-Modern British political history (particularly postwar and I am doing 40 credits on Thatcher in final year)
-Tudor England (this is my personal interest)
-Civil Rights in America
I tend to focus more on trying to examine motives, reasoning, context and cause/effect when studying history, and will never make you memorise facts or dates.

Great level of language, explains things well and enjoys drawing on her own experience in Germany. Possesses a genuine interest in classic German literature. Would recommend highly.
