When studying chemistry, especially organic chemistry, it is incredibly difficult to visualize molecules, which are 3D, on a paper which is 2D. To try and counter this, I like to teach organic chemistry with a molecular model set in which I can build a molecule to explain concepts such as chirality.
A typical lesson plan involves drawing and explaining diagrams in a way that does not just merely state why things are the way they are but to also provide an explanation to facilitate understanding of the material.
In my opinion, organic chemistry is not a hard course. The reason why it is so difficult is because professors fail to properly explain and brush over the fundamentals. This causes students to try and just memorize all the mechanisms which is an absolutely gargantuan task. If one understands the fundamentals, no memorization is needed as one can logically deduce why mechanisms occur the way they do. I plan to thoroughly go over these fundamentals to try and alleviate the intimidation one can have when trying to understand organic chemistry reaction mechanisms.
My lessons also contain multiple examples which highlight exceptions to certain rules with an explanation as to why they occur.
My lessons are tailored to high school and undergraduate students who are struggling or eager to learn more about chemistry.
I believe my strength as a tutor is my passion for the subject. I genuinely love the field I studied in and would love to spread my passion for it. I would love to have the opportunity to show someone that an infamously intimidating course like chemistry is an extremely beautiful and rewarding field.
