Part of the preparation of young musicians for a career in music is to be found in the liberal arts. Having an understanding of how language, art, politics, religion, scientific discovery, and geography, inter alia affect music composition and performance practice is vital for any musician.
I was extremely fortunate to have studied with Ilya Alexandrovich Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. This man played a major role in the development of conducting as a true profession, developing his own system of instruction and training based on the philosophy of “making music visible with your hands.” Musin’s approach requires a physical relationship with the music as if one were sculpting the sound, an approach that he developed after observing Constantin Stanislavski, the legendary founder of the “Method Acting” technique. This approach emphasizes emotional truth and inner motivation, and Musin would always tell his students to create an event, to evoke an emotional state of mind when they were on the podium. Musin taught his students to develop gestures that emerged from the emotional nature of the music.
Musin’s approach has challenged and motivated me not just in my own performance career, but also in my teaching, to the extent that I am excited and invigorated at the prospect of being a generative influence in the training of independent and critically-thinking young musicians today. This entails developing each student’s understanding of the origin, structure, and content of a particular period or piece of music so that they are able to effectively, convincingly, and artistically communicate its inherent aesthetics. At the same time, it is my practice to help students learn and appreciate that accomplishment is the outcome of work, that consistent and conscientious work makes for ongoing discovery and pleasure, and that the resulting sense of achievement builds self-esteem, the desire to excel, and a lifetime of success as a musician.
