About Mark
My first year teaching I begged the students to like me and they hated me. My second year teaching I ruled my classroom like a military commander and my students hated me. During my third year, I found my balance and myself as a teacher.
Passionate, caring, empathetic, dedicated, interactive, inspiring, innovative, goal orientated and intelligent are a few ways to describe myself as a teacher. I truly believe teaching is a vocation and my greatest benefit I can provide is being who I am and this is a teacher.
Teaching is a calling I’ve been following from a young age. I am not sure if I can explain it clearly, why teaching, why not social work, or healthcare. But sometimes you just hear this voice in your head, this calling in your soul, and you know that something is the right thing to do, or the right goal to follow. That’s how I have always felt about teaching.

My aim as a tutor is to create in my students a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions and being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. I am flexible, patient and a good listener. I am not just here as your instructor but as a partner, working with you in a professional manner and willing to share my own experiences and learn from yours also. My approach varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don’t lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students’ homework for them!
