About Victor

As a researcher in Medical Image Analysis, it is paramount to have a piece of working knowledge to avoid misleading the research community(ies). Through experience, I have learned that foundational knowledge is paramount when dealing with unstructured and heterogeneous real-world data. With a background in Statistics (BSc) and Computer Science (MSc), coupled with a decade of both academic and professional experience, I believe I am well-positioned to explain the rudiments in a clear and concise manner.

I constantly keep myself updated and implement strategic approaches when teaching, because, "no two individuals are exactly alike" synonymous with "precision medicine" (in the medical field). I employ a definitive approach tailored towards individual attention to foster a better grasp of the subject. I am definitely not a great tutor, but one who gives dedicated attention to my students. Feel free to get in touch, if you would want to experience that "African touch".

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Well, growing up in the suburbs of eastern Nigeria, I had the privilege of being mentored by my dad (an Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry), a strict disciplinarian who placed more emphasis on "continuous learning". I was keen to understand how stuff works and I vividly remember reading Marshall Brain's book on "HOW STUFF WORKS" as a teenager which was recommended again by my father and that aroused my curiosity in Science and Engineering. Thanks to my dad and mentor, I quickly grasped the fundamentals and as suggested, ventured into teaching Mathematics and Science at the age of 18. Fast-forward, I pursued an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science and a postgraduate degree in Computer Science.

Shortly after my postgraduation, I learnt of the "ever-green" field of Data Science and Machine Learning. To ensure I stay afloat in this competitive field, I enrolled and completed lots of certifications from both Udemy, Coursera, and Udacity amongst others. Still longing for more, I decided to pursue a doctoral program (Ph.D.) in Computer Science and will be completing my thesis by 2022 (hopefully).

  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

My motivation is of two-folds viz:-

    1. Passion: The zeal to reach out and make a lasting imprint on the minds of the younger generation has been (and will always be) my driving force, as in the words of Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

    2. Mentorship: My greatest motivation came from dad who emphasized I become the "chip of the old block", hence, he encouraged me every step of the way, for which I am forever grateful
  • How does your work help society?

Teaching is a noble profession, although teachers are paid below average. I "pride" myself as not only a teacher but a mentor and a friend to my students who always lookup to me for guidance and career directions. Having a blend of both academic and industry experience, I always try to give back to society by nurturing my students and educating them on how to transition to the industry after graduating from the college. Through my wealth of experience, I have helped incubated a start-up that deals exclusively on organic farming in Mysore-India and have helped develop a covid-assist app amongst others(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wVMYZc4ZyU&ab_channel=Victor%27sPortal) to help society in these challenging times.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

Well, I cannot think of a better role model besides my dad who relentlessly turned me into the geek I am today (detailed above).
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching

Haha, I am an avid cyclist, an endurance athlete, and a nature lover. When I am not busy studying or teaching, I would be busy doing my outdoor activities which I record on the STRAVA app (https://www.strava.com/athletes/47948537). By the way, I am an advocate of organic foods and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

I have always dreamt of becoming the best in whatever I do, and I can relate to my postgraduate days where our project team (final year MSc students) was to prepare a proposal for a university-funded project. It happens that our course representative who doubles as our team lead was indisposed, I jumped in to lead the team and after reviewing relevant pieces of literature, drafted the proposal which was presented to the selection committee. It turns out that our team was awarded the funds and the panel cited out the quality of our proposal as well as my presentation skills as the key reason the funds were sanctioned.
